Industry Clubs to Join/ How to Grow?

Hi Guys,

I recently joined a private equity real estate shop out here in San Francisco and I am having a horrible time with networking (especially with Covid-19) Are there any Industry clubs worth joining? Any tips you would give to an analyst just starting out in the industry?

SF's ULI chapter is terrific, the YLG has a ton of good events, register for the mentorship program (do it every year). SPUR has interesting talks (hyper local) but the happy hours can be a little dull (more development oriented) Belden Club is a good one too. Basically just a drinking club with a real estate problem. NAIOP is strong as well. Have a good young leaders program.

I don't know the SF market particularly well, but NAIOP and ULI are generally good nationwide and have some super strong local chapters.

Here is key advice, pick at least one to get really involved with, like volunteer, get on boards, become an officer, etc. It is really one of the best/easiest ways to network, get noticed, and get 'leadership' skills. It is time consuming, so make sure you like the org and the people.

If you do the above at the local chapter level well, try to 'level' up and do the same for the national organization. This will require going to probably two meetings/conferences per year; not cheap so hopefully your firm pays.

I did this with NAIOP and was a significant pathway that let me level up jobs and move from a secondary market to major market. It's not hard and people always act 'too busy', I think it is a super easy way to advance a career and do better at one's job.
