Jobs that involve politics + finance
Hey guys,
I'm currently on my way to a BSBA in Finance but I was hoping for some advice on career options I should be keeping in mind. I haven't taken higher-level finance courses yet, so I'm not sure whether I'd be more interested in M&A, AM, HF, or any of the other sub-categories of finance, but I do know that in addition to finance, I'm also very interested in politics. I've been toying with the idea of trying to get into lobbying or campaign finance but I was just wondering are there wall street jobs where being politically inclined might be more advantageous? Or in other words what WS jobs might actually involve political analysis as a somewhat regular thing I need to do?
Thanks in advance for the responses!
Public finance has its fair share and being politically connected could be a big positive. That said you don't get involved with any of that until VP or higher
Would working for the federal reserve be the sort of thing you're talking about as well?
I'm not too familiar with that and is something entirely different so not sure. I suppose you could work for the SEC, IMF, things like that
Does it help to be sound in Politics if working in finance? (Originally Posted: 06/03/2012)

Discussing politics at work is not a good idea.
I'll echo gstackle. Unless you are with a friend, I wouldn't bring it up. Wall St. is actually politically diverse.
The president of BX, Tony James, is a major Obama donor: http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2012/05/15/at-obama-fundraiser-no-one-me…
The head of Elliott, Paul Singer, has given millions to Romney: http://www.npr.org/2012/04/17/150426158/superdonor-backs-romney-and-gay…
I imagine you wouldn't turn down a job offer with either firm (nor would 99% of people on this site). So don't give people a reason not to hire you.
Good to be well-versed in. Bad to discuss at the workplace/dinner table/school/among friends.
Do you mean having political internships or just talking about it at work?
Political internships might be worse. It doesn't just say "I am a democrat/republican", it says "I really care about this stuff, to the point where I am willing to do it professionally". I would leave it off my resume, as with political clubs.
If it is something like working for the Fed/SEC/CFPB, you are fine.
I will note that I have never actually met somebody who hates libertarians. Either people on wall st. are libertarians, support them, or are indifferent.
