Laid off only 3 months in

How does that look on my resume? It wasn't for performance, and my references would be able to back that up. It was staff reductions, as I chose to work at a smaller shop. Before that, I had a summer at a BB.

I'm concerned that when I apply for analyst positions it won't look good to the recruiter, who'll assume the worst and pass on interviewing me. This happened a few months ago and I've been running my own web startup since while I figure things out.

Any advice/constructive comments would be valued.

Look at it this way - you are three months ahead of the candidates with zero experience. Getting some initial experience is the hardest part. Maybe even indicate on your resume "laid off due to staff reduction" or something similar. Not sure what the etiquette on that is, I'm sure others do.

 

Can't your references get you a connection somewhere? Assuming it wasn't for performance, I would think they would be willing to help you land somewhere else.

I'm in Canada, and the market here is pretty much frozen. Trying for NY, LA etc anywhere where there's openings, and my references don't know any one there.

With your experience you can definitely get something. But you're going to have to create new references. It's linkedin time. Get introductions, guess emails, and email 20 people or more a day. You'll start getting informational meetings and you'll find some openings. With your experience, the hard part is over since you'll most likely qualify for an interview for experienced hire openings. Remember, it only takes 1.

Thanks for the encouragement, Mr. Manager. I've been applying online and then emailing people that work in the group I'm applying to. I've only heard back from 2/15 people I've emailed, but like you said all it takes is one. Hoping for the best :)

You'll get there. When I started it was like 1 out of 20. Now i'm on info calls and interviews every day. MM VP asked me to set up a lunch with him just this morning. It will happen, but its like a Snowball rolling down the hill.

 

If I were in your position, I would add an asterick to your most recent employment, which references a list of professional references at the end of your resume with the names, contact info, title and COMPANY (clear as day) from your most recent employer (preferably your supervisor and from your internship (preferably your supervisor). This will immediately give the recruiter/HR/hiring manager comfort that you have no fear in having them call your past employer(s) to get the scoop since the scoop will probably be benign.

The fact that you have BB internship experience plus a little additional experience will get you noticed at smaller firms immediately. If I were hiring I would be interested in your resume with the BB internship and the experience, so long as I knew you weren't fired for cause.
