Moving to New York to find prop trading gig!
I want to find a prop trading firm that will hire a non college grad that is willing to make the required capital contribution (10-30k). Where is the best place to find such a list. Can anyone recommend prop firms with good reputations? Whats life like as a prop trader in the city? If I were to make a 10k capital contribution, how much leverage will I receive on it?
Well I just had an interview with one - T3 Trading down by battery park. 5k capital contribution plus a $2500 training program will allow you to trade with 100k of the firm's money. You need to be 21 and have a series 56 and 24 license though, but they will sponsor you for it if you decide to go that route. Culture was a very relaxed, fratty atmosphere. Not sure if they take non-college hires though, but its worth checking them out as this is the exact type of firm it looks like you're after. Good luck
why would you need a 24, that's only for supervision i thought
The packet he gave me reads:
"I understand that I must take and pass both the Series 56 (or receive a waiver) and the Series 24 (or receive a waiver) to have access to any Risk Management System or Supervise any Associate Persons"
Prior to that, it lists that you must have a series 56 so I assume you only need that to trade.
I wouldn't pay for training. It's not going to be high quality. Prop firms offer a great opportunity to learn about day trading without the $25k capital contribution. Fees are also a lot lower than they would be through a personal account on TradeStation or something like that. I think WTS is good. Paper trade before you trade live though.
Which shop did you end up with? I am looking for the same thing right now. Any insider suggestions?
List of NYC prop shops (including branches of chicago shops)? (Originally Posted: 06/22/2010)
Hey guys,
I've been searching the forums and could not find a comprehensive list of prop shops in NYC. Most topics cite FNYS and Jane Street, but there seems to be a consensus that many good Chicago shops (I know of DRW) have operations in NYC.
Could I get a list of those firms with prop operations in NYC? I know Chicago is the hub of trading but for personal reasons I want to work in NYC.
Find the guy who was offering to pull capIQ lists for people, it's a recent thread. Pretty sure this one's in there.
Prop trading NYC (Originally Posted: 10/07/2008)
Im just curious.. This year I graduated from Baruch college, and had a mid office job at MS and also did my own trading before. I am interested in prop trading. I dont mind 0 base salary or putting in my own capital, but is there any respectable firm out there that would teach me how to trade? I really want to avoid those prop trading firms that advertise on Craiglist where the people there have no college degrees or are changing careers from a security guard into a trader..

A List of NY Prop Shops? (Originally Posted: 12/14/2008)
I know that most of the proprietary shops are in Chicago, but does anyone have a list of those in NY? (top 15). Thanks in advance!
trillium, first new york
from what ive heard, the only ones worth looking at in NY are trillium, fnys, Jane Street, and SIG (in philly). someone correct me if i am wrong
There is a Prop Shop Group on here that you can join. I thinks they have an extensive list of prop shops in their group forum.
good luck.
Yea it's a pretty solid list, but most of the firms are in Chicago some are just links to trading software. Wouldn't be a bad idea for the prop trading group to develop it's own list (I think the one on there is an external link), I know I'd be more than willing to pitch in.
There's still some New York ones on there though so it's definitely worth looking at.
I've switched my desire to work in NYC to wanting to work in Chicago over the last 6-8 months anyways. My kind of town, Chicago is.
