Looking for nontraditional finance career path ideas
Hello, and thank you for reading. I am looking to start a career in money management, but I don't think I am well suited for any of the traditional career paths, so I'm looking for ideas about how to get started in the industry. About me:
Basic situation
28 years old. Graduated from one of the best undergraduate business schools in the USA in 2013.
Self employed since. Started companies with varying degrees of success, wrote a non-fiction book (unrelated to finance), volunteered at a research lab, worked on a wide variety of projects, invested in startups.
Positives
I love investing. I have been doing it for a few years and am pretty good at it - up triple digits YTD, outperformed the S&P for as long as I have been at it by a margin wider than 2 and 20 (max exposure 100% long, 30% short). Managing seven figures right now, reasonably certain I can perform well with 8. I have read about a hundred books on finance, economics and trading. I know a lot about the markets, economics, valuations, trading strategies, etc. There are certain technologies that I know more about than 99.99% of investors (biology-related). I score well on tests (170/170 math 169/170 verbal GRE) and can pass any financial exam out there. I have written on Seeking Alpha, all of the ideas I published there have worked out well, and I have hundreds of followers. I do not need to make money to survive for a while - I can invest a few years of my time to build something. I can network reasonably well with anybody from dirty hippies (no offence meant, I have friends who are literally dirty all of the time) to billionaires. I write code reasonably well.
Negatives
I have no corporate work experience in the last 5 years. The only outside employment experience I have is a year at a central bank, and 4 months at a commercial bank (I left on very good terms). I have no connections in the industry. I will not work in IB, or in any place with a toxic culture. I cannot do 100-hour weeks for health reasons. I live in Boulder, Colorado (though I can move). I would prefer not to commit all of my capital to a business for a few years. I am not interested in any jobs that don't involve any actual money management, or at least idea generation. I can raise a few millions of dollars to manage, but nowhere near enough to cover the operational costs of running a hedge fund. Ideally, I want to be compensated based on my investment performance. I have strong preferences in investing strategies and would not want to work in PE, quant funds, stat arb funds, anything commodity-related, 99% of crypto-related projects, distressed debt-related companies or do anything involving real estate.
Does anybody have any suggestions about what I can do to get started in the industry? Any ideas would be appreciated - from companies that hire people with odd pasts to completely novel career paths that haven't even been possible before the Internet.
Thank you!
