Looking for some opinions on networking outside of IBD
So I have the opportunity to meet with a partner from GS next week (I’ll be taking this opportunity regardless, don’t worry). This partner is not in IBD, which is what I’m focusing on getting into, and this brings to mind a question.
My question is, how valuable is networking with people from firms you like that are outside of IBD (with the goal of getting into IBD)? Just thinking it over in my head it seems that MDs or higher from other divisions are probably useful, as they’ll likely have connections in IBD. But is it rude to meet with these people and ask if they can send my resume on to other divisions, and would it actually be helpful?
Good companies want to place candidates where they will be interested, challenged, and will thrive.
I would meet with the GS partner, tell him you're interested in GS. Get the ball rolling in his division, but let him know you're also interested in IB if he can line up another meeting.
Most of the time, it works and you get another meeting. Sometimes you get it immediately if you're in the same building and they are friends.
You don't just have to apply to one position in a company.
