Marriage watches anyone?
Anyone here into marriage watches? Anything in particular to look out for?
For those of you who don't know what they are, they are vintage pocket watches that have been converted into wrist watches. I'm very curious about these, but have little experience with them and was wondering if they're worth buying. There are some beautiful looking pieces out there.
I wouldn't buy one. They seem interesting at first, but IMO they're typically gigantic and tend to look really goofy in person
I have seen some that are pretty large. There are some that are roughly the same size as "normal" watches though.
You can buy one once you're an investment manager at a European family office.
Must it be a European family office?
What's your goal? If you think they are pretty, go ahead. But consider that pre-wristwatches, the movements were not nearly as high quality as they are today. IMO, the best of the pocketwatches would have been all the train watches - many US makers that are gone or absorbed or went consumer grade. Pre-war, your Walthams, Hamiltons, etc., were everything that a Rolex or Omega was. Post-war, US makes went consumer grade, Swiss continued to bring very high quality and reduced the bar for each level of complication, though not fully democratized. Point being, if you like a relatively high quality timer, that is relatively large (shrinking components has always been a big deal), that is not a super fancy movement, then pay what it is worth to you.
If you want to collect vintage watches, that is not where I would start.
Goal is to just by a nice watch with a more vintage look to it. But the info you have provided me is very helpful, thank you sir.
Check out watchuseek forums - tons of good information on really slick vintage watches and everything else. Obviously if you want an oversized watch, a marriage/convert/franken might be for you - there are a lot of really nice field watches and tons of nice dress watches from 40s, 50s, 60s, but they tend to be 30-32mm cases. Consider whether you want stainless, gold, gold-filled - and I would highly suggest automatic.
honestly I would rather become someone who collects fast food sauce packets than someone who collects marriage watches
