Negotiating a Job Offer

Received a live offer yesterday and was hoping for some general feedback.

Position would be running multifamily acquisitions for a single core market. The firm in question was flexible as to how seasoned a person they would consider (anywhere from 7-20 years is how they articulated it to me during initial interview). I am at the upper end of that level.

Had a detailed discussion regarding my comp expectations early on in the interview process, after which they asked for references etc so figured that we were in the ballpark (otherwise why would they want to move forward).

Long story short the offer came in with base comp about 15% below the bogey I gave them.

Going back to them with my original "ask" is one strategy, although I am trying to think through the justification rather than simply saying "here's what I am worth". I'm assuming, given my level of experience and the type of position, that the firm is expecting me to come back with a higher number vs. simply signing the offer as-is.

Just curious how others have negotiated offers and the rationale used to push for higher base comp.

Thanks
