Network with Head of M&A
Just saw that the Co-Head of M&A for a BB is an alumni of my school. There are barely any others at the bank and most are analysts.
I got his email, so I wonder if I should reach out. Obviously if it goes well, it will be huge, but if he gets annoyed by it, I could probably get blacklisted at every bank on the street lol
What do you guys think?
Just send a well tailored email. As long as you're not stupid, the worse that could happen is that he doesn't reply back.
I guess just scared that he will be annoyed and think wtf why would this intern want to waste my time
Nah, I reached out to the Vice Chairman of IB at an EB, non-target here with not a single alumni at the bank. Our conversation wasn't anything insanely amazing, but he was chill and offered to push my resume through. They know why you're reaching out. As long as you are able to hold a conversation and are genuinely interested in what they do, it will help your chances 10x.
Go for it. You'd have to say / do something really stupid to get blacklisted everywhere.
I go to a non-target with like 5 alums on the street, one happens to be the HEAD of the IB at a lower BB. He took my call and went to bat for me. Go for it man. Worse that happens is he doesn't reply.
Don't be so nervous about it. They're people too. If theyre a senior banker odds are at various points in their career someone went to bat for them, I'm sure they'll be happy to pay it forward. If not, oh well. You'd have to be extrodinarily arrogant and rude to convince them to spend the time to black ball you across the street.
If you go into interviews with this type of mentality, you will bomb them. People who work in IB, despite whatever their job title is, are normal people at the end of the day. Nobody would blacklist someone who is wanting to network. Many years ago, he was in the same shoes as you.
I am speaking to a very, very senior banker (vice-chairman level) at a mid-tier BB in their top group. When I speak with him, should I ask for further introductions or ask if I can speak with a staffer? or what should be my best plan going forward if I want to land an interview/offer there?
