Networking with former interviewers
Hey everyone,
Is it okay to network with former interviewers at companies/positions you got dinged at?
What are we supposed to say to build the relationship, should we continue to show interest in the same role that we interviewed for and hope that they would select us for an interview during the next recruiting cycle?

Always keep up your contacts. The best people are the best in large part because they know a lot of people and a lot of people know them.
Ya, i got initially turned down for an internship once. kept in contact w the gut and i got an off cycle internship out of it.
thanks guys, i'm not interested in the position that i interviewed for but would like to maintain the contacts... hesitant because i interviewed only a couple of weeks ago and dont want them to think that i changed my mind that quickly
Yeah, definitely stay in touch. Try asking what you could improve on your resume and questions like that. I went through that during the internship search process, and maintaining those connections (and through them finding a chain of 5 more people) has led me to what is now one of my best FT prospects.
what other questions can i ask my former interviewer besides about my resume? id def like to stay in touch w to be prepare myself if another opportunity opens up w them, so any advice would help...thanks
Yeah I'm curious too, I got to the final round of a boutique but got dinged. I emailed the person who interviewed about what I could do to improve but never got a response.
futurebanker: it's kind of hit or miss - that's true with any kind of networking. sometimes there's just not much you can do beyond emailing them every now and then.
re_88: in terms of other things you can ask, try 'what was your career path' 'what advice do you have for someone in my position trying to get a job' 'what differentiates [insert firm] from other places you've worked it' ' what do you think of the culture at [insert firm]' - basically, anything that will get them talking that you couldn't have looked up yourself online.
like i said above, it's really hit or miss with networking, but when it's a hit, it can be amazingly helpful - i finally landed the ft position i was shooting for a couple days ago, and none of it would have happened without a long stretch of networking that began with someone who dinged me in an interview last year.

Yes, asking for a business card is fine, and then make sure you follow up with a brief thank you email and let them know your are available if they have any more questions.

Had an interview at a mm i-bank last week. My interviewer was an alumnus and had a pretty interesting background. Was wondering if I could set up an informational interview with him or if this would be odd since I just interviewed with them?
I already sent out the thank you to him and will expect to hear back in regards to the interview in a week. Again, I'm a sophomore so I am still looking to expand my network and set myself up for next year. Thoughts?
The one time I tried to network with an interviewer he told me he'd like to, but felt obligated not to. And then he forwarded me to another alum at the firm.
