Networking with people who are physically very close by

If there are firms physically close to where you guys work - 1 minute walk - how do you network with the people in there? Do you look up the firm online and try to find out the individuals that work there and then attempt to guess their email address? Is it appropriate to walk into the firm and ask the receptionist about the firm or even ask for a business card?

Any views or personal experiences on networking are welcome and encouraged.

It's easy to find e-mail addresses by just google-ing "@.com" to obtain the format of their system, then applying it to people's names.

Yes, and finding their names in the first place is the tough part. How do you find out exactly who works there if they don't have a website? Is it appropriate to show up.

No. In fact, if I were you, I'd just let them come to you. Each bank has a database of MENSA members that they generally consult from when looking at who they should give interviews to.

You made some valuable contributions before but why make an ass out of yourself now?

Because I felt the need to change from being helpful to having fun.
