How do off-cycle internships work?
What is the typical timeline -- when do they typically start and how long are they?
If it's not listed on an application, and they ask you when you are available to start, does that mean the timeline is flexible?
Is there a difference between UK and US off-cycle internships?
What firms typically offer off-cycle positions? Apart from some BB's, do buy side firms offer such internships, and is it worth networking / trying to land one?
How to go about asking for one if no application is available?

They are similar to summer internships and usually take place in the fall.
Some of the smaller buyside firms are flexible on their internship timelines.
Networking is your best bet to get your foot in the door.
Thank you.
How long do they usually last? Would a month (4 weeks) seem reasonable, or are they usually the same length / longer than summer internships?
And when would be the best time to do one?
Assuming I don't want to take a semester off, would it be reasonable to network for one in the fall, and do one during winter break? ( 4 weeks)
I don't think 4 weeks would the best.
talk to the bank/fund to see how flexible they can be.
Sophomore Off-Cycle Internship (Originally Posted: 08/15/2016)
So, I just finished my sophomore year at Dartmouth, and am looking for an off-cycle internship right now. I have a pretty good resume and GPA, just not quite good enough to get an off-cycle internship at a big bank.
However, among the options I have are an unpaid winter internship with Protocol Capital Management, which does some hedge fund advisory services, and a fall internship with a small private equity firm (Century Equity Partners) in Boston that primarily invests in middle market financial services companies. Is one of these a clear favorite over the other if I hope to land a summer analyst role in banking junior summer? I am a computer science minor so I also have a few small tech startup opportunities, but I am very interested in finance and want to show my interest by picking up some relevant experience, especially at a school like Dartmouth.
Is it worth it to cold email or cold call any other places? It doesn't seem like there are very many places with off cycle internship programs; a lot of places are scaling them down even for Dartmouth
Thanks!

Just wondering. Ddi you have prior experience before you landed your SA offer?
Yes, I did.
Well, it's getting late. How about:
-you do one of your 2 remaining semesters this January
-you crush your SA and receive an offer
-you travel/backpack the world next fall (with an offer in hand)
-you come back next winter to celebrate senior year with your friends
Trust me, you do not need that extra internship if everything goes well this summer.
Off cycle internship in May? (Originally Posted: 12/30/2016)
Is it possible to start an off cycle internship in May for 4 months?
Or is it only possible to do a summer internship over the summer?
It is possible if you are in Europe
Off cycle internship waiting time (Originally Posted: 01/07/2017)
Applied and interviewed for an off cycle internship position in BB last November. Emailed HR this month and they said my application is still being considered and is under compliance checks. The internship starts this February. Is the waiting time normal? Or am I already rejected? Thanks!
ur probably rejected
probably rejected, I guess you are not their first choice. Ask them if they have other openings, off-cycle pop up from time to time.

Can I postpone the start-date of an off-cycle internship? (Originally Posted: 03/20/2018)
Hey guys,
I just received an offer for an off-cycle internship from a big mid-market investment bank in one of their regional offices. Unfortunately, due to my bachelor thesis I will not be able to make it to the start date. Do you know if there's a chance I can postpone the internship for a month or so?
Hi MNAPRO, don't worry, the WSO Monkey Bot is here.... I'm hoping one of these links will help find your answer:

Offcycle internships during MSF (nighttime vs daytime classes) (Originally Posted: 03/29/2018)
I was wondering how do people intern during school on off-cycle basis. How hard are these to come by and are these usually part time or full time? I am debating between 2 MSF's, out of which one is at night/weekend and the other during the day. With the night classes I can potentially do full time internships or maybe even two part-time internships at once but I'm not sure if that's even possible. Would like to hear from people who intern during the school year.
I kind of asked a similar question in the jobs forum about the location of the MSF's, but no one seems to answer anything here except for IB/PE questions. If someone could chime in there as well that would be great. Thanks.

Off-Cycle internship in US/UK for European? (Originally Posted: 01/04/2008)
Hi. I was wondering if any BB/PE in US/UK offer off-cycle internships for EU students in a realistically large amount since a lot of continental EU students don't have vacation in summer but in spring and autumn.
So there would be a "lack" of Spring/Autumn-Analysts and a quite favourable situation.
You can choose off-cycle internships instead of SA on the application web but are the BBs/PEs even considering giving internships at that time?
Anyone know which BB looks for bigger amount of interns at that time?
Thanks!

Starting period for a 6-month off-cycle internship (Originally Posted: 08/01/2010)
Hi!
I'm a European student and I'm supposed to do a 6-month internship either in London or NY and more precisely I'm looking for a position within a M&A or Leveraged Finance team. For academic reasons, it would be much easier for me to start it in March rather then January.
So, my question is: Are IB recruiting people for off-cycle internships starting in March?
Thanx for your help!
GS offers one week internships specifically for european students and I think Deutsche has an internship scheduled around the european undergrad schedule. The only issue I see is that it is impossible to prove yourself to the right people within a week. Try going for an IB apprenticeship in Frankfurt or London. They last about a year
Well, I'm in my penultimate year and I already have experiences in Finance. I'm really looking for an internship in M&A.
So, that there are no programmes in IB scheduled from March in NYC or London, except spring programmes but there are too short?
Thanx!
No one?
You can get off-cycle internships with the big banks but they tend to be in other cities, e.g. Frankfurt. The problem with that is that you need to know the local language. Have you tried cold calling some of the smaller boutiques? They might take you on for six months.
Also, the Spring weeks or the one week internships in March are exclusively for first year students (or second year of a four year program).
A little taken aback by the off-cycle interview questions for BB. (Originally Posted: 09/20/2010)
Just got off the phone with a vp hiring for an off cycle internship at a BB. These were some of the questions:
Tell me about a time where you had to source information from multiple sources
Tell me about a time when you had to be respectful to someone older than you such as a professor or parent
Tell me about a time when you had to share information with a team
Tell me about a time when you had to handle multiple things at once and how you managed to do it
There were 3 more in a similar vein, which I forget. Phone interview lasted 15 min, said he would get back to me with the "next step." Also said that they were questions the firm "had to ask"
why were you taken aback by those? seem pretty simple bull-shittable/answerable questions to me.
I'd have been pretty pleased with those questions...?
I was taken aback precisely because they were so simple. I was expecting some market questions and more focused questions about my resume. They were all just general like that...
First interview is always general!
sounds simple... that would hit me a lot less hard then questions like "what multiple should you use....."
Landed SA, now what about off cycle? (Originally Posted: 01/14/2015)
Hi all,
I recently landed a SA position in IBD at a mid-tier BB in London. I'm quite confident I'll be placed in the industry group I'm aiming for due to my background.
My question is regarding off-cycle internships in the fall. I was thinking of applying to have something to fall back on should I not get a return offer. Is it appropriate to list my SA position as "incoming" on my CV? I think it would help for screening purposes since this will be my first banking experience but also acknowledge that it's strange to list a job you haven't started yet.
I liked all the people I met during the process and would love to work at this bank FT but then again in the event where I don't get an offer, how likely is it that I can land some interviews at respetable banks after the summer? I did turn down a couple of final rounds at elite boutiques after I signed. One of them offers off-cycle as well but I didn't think to ask at the time. Would it be appropriate to get back in touch with the recruiter?
