PE Abroad...then back to U.S.?

Hey guys,

I’ve begun examining possible opportunities after my banking stint, assuming I don’t continue to move up through the ranks. I’m ultimately interested in PE or corp dev and am considering firms/funds (no megas) with offices located both inside and outside the U.S. If possible, I’d like to work in the foreign office of [insert fund/major company in my industry] for a year or few years, but have a prearranged agreement to move back to the firm’s office in the U.S. I’ve traveled abroad, but I’ve always wanted the experience of living abroad for a brief period, while still advancing my career.

My question is this: has anyone managed to work abroad (preferably in a PE/corporate setting) for a few years, with the assurance that you’ll get transferred back stateside? Or if you weren’t able to transfer back to your firm’s U.S. office, were you able to return to the U.S. without your foreign stint somewhat negatively impacting your career? The biggest fear I have is working abroad briefly, then attempting to head back to the U.S. in search of another position, only to be met with questions as to why I thought working abroad for a few years was anything more than an excuse to meet foreign chicks and "culture" myself while working.

Thanks in advance.
