PE analysts who've tried to lateral - how did you do it?
For those of you who joined a buyside firm straight out of undergrad (any firm, not just MF) and have tried to lateral for analyst or associate roles - how did you navigate this? i.e. talking to headhunters, networking at other firms, managing relationships within your current firm, etc.
Additional assumptions if anyone has general advice: in a major market, firm is established and known in its space but not broadly. No formal training programs at the firm but function as an associate-lite (due to prior experience and being resourceful).

I have used HH and networking to secure an offer. I have also maintained relationships, but with ppl that are one or two steps above me, not the very top.
The ppl one or two steps above are most likey to move to other shops and can help you (so its a long-term strategy) vs ppl at the top not giving a shit about your future and don't want to retrain others so are not interested in helping you, at least at my shop.
