Pivoting out of internal audit for a research role

I am currently in an IA analyst program at BB working on tech related audits and I been here for 4 months (1 1/2 years including my internship with them). I passed CFA level 1 in June this year and I have registered for CFA level 2 next year. I came from a non-target school majoring in Finance with a major gpa of 3.6 . I hope to get into a research role some day. Is the CFA even worth it, I heard many CFA charters can't even get decent jobs. How should I refine myself to be able to land a research interview? What skill sets should I be developing on my own to be research qualified? The irrelevance to investment in my current role worries me that I won't be able to move into any investment role (My job isn't even a BO role for CIB/AM) I am just staying at my current role because it pays decent for an IA role and they will be paying for my CFA level 2. Should I be applying to jobs after my CFA L2 is complete? Or leaving IA asap because many says it is a dead end career. Any advice would help. Thanks.
