'Pressuring' a senior banker for a quick answer ?
Hi everyone !
So I found myself in an uncomfortable situation. I've got a job offer for a job that I don't really think I would enjoy, but it is a job. In the same firm however, I have a second interview with a senior banker the day before (tuesday) the deadline (wednesday) for the other offer. My question is this : should I 'pressure' the senior banker, explaining that I really much prefer this position, but that I have a deadline the next day for the other position ? During the first interview, I was told that this could be done and decided by Friday, but still... it would be after the deadline. It is only a verbal offer, so I could still say yes verbally, and then refuse the written offer. But it's in the same firm so it's not really good practice I imagine...
What do you guys think ?
Thanks !
Yeah, I think its fine to be honest. Tell the person you have another offer but will pull the trigger in your group of interest if they will take you.
I don't quite grasp your timeline though. Are you talking about this Tuesday? If you have to decide by Wednesday and you have an interview on Tuesday, you might want to give the guy a heads up before the interview as it usually takes weeks to get a written offer sent to candidates.
You're not 'pressuring' a banker to do anything. You're giving him a heads up, an FYI.
Yes. Basically I have a verbal offer and should give a verbal agreement by Wednesday. But on Tuesday I have the other interview. The thing is, it will still be a verbal agreement if I say yes.
During the first interview, they told me they could reach a decision by the next Friday, so they seemed to think a quick answer could be given. But I don't want to 'over' pressure it.
Yeah, just email the banker in the group you like today (Sunday).
Exhibit candor.
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Dear Mr. BSD,
I look forward to our interview on Tuesday. I have a keen interest in your group, but have received a verbal offer from XYZ group 'Company'. They expect a decision from me by Wednesday. My preference is in your group (name group), but I do not want to lose the opportunity to work at 'Company'. I look forward to our meeting and if all goes well I hope you can help to advise on next steps.

You're really just planting the seed that you are facing an imminent decision without pressing him. Hopefully you will know after the Tuesday interview how you stand in the group you like, and it is a possibility that he will say he wants you in the group, or go ahead and accept the other offer, or something different like, go ahead an start there, but I will consider you in the future in my group (might be an easy internal transfer).
Also, other offers on the table even within the company often make you look better, as you are in demand/valued by others.
I am afraid to be too 'pushy' before even having the interview with the senior banker.
