Resume Help - Big 4 Tax to Real Estate Development
I am looking to make a career switch from Big 4 Tax to Development Analyst role.
Could you please help me with my resume?
Removed the Link - Thank you so much for your valuable feedback!
I would love to break into real estate industry so I am open to any position I can take that would be a good fit for me. I have taken the Excel and Fundamentals and Advanced Modeling Courses because I don't have modeling experience.
Would the RED Certificate something that I should pursue instead of pursuing graduate degrees (MBA/MSRE/MSRED)? Should I try to get the Argus Software Certification (ASC) to show in my resume?
Please let me know!
Thank you so much!
Anyone?
WSO offers a paid resume review service, so I typically don't like going too in depth in threads like these, but in general:
This is a good resume.
I would watch using self-congratulatory words like "Mastered." Interns rarely master things.
Be consistent with using periods or not using periods at the end of bullet points. I don't really care which way you go (although if you have multiple sentences in a bullet, do periods throughout) but you missed one.
I would add something under your Private School. It looks odd without a bullet.
I would bold or increase the font size or something on the section headers. To me, it blends into the firm name a bit.
I actually signed up for the WSO Resume Review yesterday, but then was told that I will receive my first revision on Monday, which is much longer than what I had anticipated. So I am debating whether or not to cancel the service.
Thank you so much CRE! Really appreciate your input! I updated my resume accordingly and have a question about adding a bullet under Private School.
My overall GPA was 3.27 although the cumulative GPA for my last 2 year in the college was 3.7 (so I revised my resume to say "Cumulative GPA for the last 2 years: 3.7/4.0." Does it look bad?)
Please let me know what the updated resume looks like. Thank you!
I think my comment got deleted somehow, here's what I meant to type:
I used to be in this position so I’ll tell you what helped me:
Network like crazy. Depends on what market you’re in and what your goals are, but this is probably going to be the best thing you can focus on. I’d recommend starting with alumni, then maybe other ex-Big 4 people from your firm that have made the transition.
Going off of networking, I’d also recommend joining an industry group like ULI in whatever market you’re in. Almost off of the members are involved in local RE (institutional, midlevel, etc.), so you’ll be amazed at the people you can meet.
Getting to know some reputable recruiters is also going to help a lot. Their own networks are generally good which will help you immensely.
Learning modeling is good, seeing you got that on your resume. BreakingintoWallStreets RE modeling course is pretty good. You’ll generally get taught Argus on the job, so I wouldn’t shell out for the cert just yet unless you really have nothing else to do.
That should be a good place to start for now. Networking is still your best bet, especially if you don’t have a lot of pedigree otherwise (non-target school, etc.).
Thank you so much BubbaBanker! I will join the ULI today and add that to my resume too :)! (and network like crazy as you said!) Thank you so much!
Just joined the ULI :)! Could you please share your tips for "networking like crazy"? I signed up for the new members greeting coffee for next month. Thank you!
Identify alums that work in real estate. Reach out via email, you can put something in the subject line like "X State U Alum - Seeking Advice" or whatever more specific, there's lots of examples of this throughout the forum. After you connect, getting a face to face meet is generally the best, as long as it's convenient for both people, but if you're really trying to break in you'll probably go to greater lengths to meet. This has been covered ad nauseam on the forum.
