Go with the M&A gig, hands down. When you go to recruit full time, people aren't going to care which BB you worked at. However, if you gained meaningful M&A experience, that can be a big boost.
The only argument I could make to take the "higher BB" is if that is the place you want to work full time.

I didn't mean to insult you, there is nothing wrong with it, its just that I think ECM is more niche than other groups and since he is going to do an SA it would be beneficial to go to a group that will give him a more transferable skill set.
Take the M&A. The best way to sell yourself full time is to say that you've done M&A in the past, and you will be more attractive to the M&A groups at the top BBs.

By subpar you mean...?
If you want to get any meaningful advice, you're going to have to be a little more specific about which banks and groups you're considering

m&a- citi/cs/baml higher BB- ms/jpm
I was asking which groups do you find subpar? As long as its not ECM id go with the ms/gs/jpm.
What's 'wrong' with ECM may I ask? In what ways is it not as advantageous as M&A if one is looking to move into private equity or hedge funds?

so dcm (or "financing") gs/ms/jpm > m&a cs, db, baml, citi?
ya basically my question boils down to corrupt's question.
if thats the case, then absolutely take M&A at a cs/baml/citi, if the other offer is dcm/ecm.
