TWO internships in HK - TWO visas?
Hi WSO,
So I got a spring analyst program offer and an usual SA offer in HK from different firms.
I'm curious if I need to apply for two separate working visas at Hong Kong Immigration Department (of course I'm a non-HK citizen). Do I need to inform both of the two firms and have them coordinate, or can I just ask them to work separately?
Also I heard the HK Visa is 3-month long... what if there's any overlap between the two visas (e.g. one from Mar 1 to June 1, the other from May 15 to Aug 15) even if my spring analyst program will end earlier. Will there be any problem with that?
Thanks a lot for reading guys. Any inputs appreciated...
First of all, if they don't overlap then you'd have to apply for both, since each one is valid for 3 months. However I think that is not available to apply at the same time; I mean, firstly you have to ask for the first one and after that for the second one. You need to let the first one to expire. Nevertheless, I'd ask directly the HK embassy in you area, since they are the only ones whom can provide you the best answer.
If you are going to be employed by two different entities, you will have to have the second entity separately apply. after you get the new Visa, you would then just take the ferry to macau and back, or jump across the border to Shenzhen and come back.
It is likely that your employers will be the ones who are actually applying for the Visa - you will likely not have to do anything other than provide them the relevant documentation.
You should also keep in mind that HK govt has begun really pandering to the local isolationist voters and the Visa process has thus become a bureaucratic burden for any employer who would want to hire any non-HKers.
When I was getting my working Visa for HK, it took the government nearly 2 months to process the application! In Singapore, I remember it may have only taken 2 weeks. The direction that HK is going in is terrible, especially as Shanghai and Singapore become ever easier for an international business to operate in.
Thanks a lot. Does that mean I can ask the two employers to apply for Visa at the same time? I heard the application process takes 4-6 weeks like you said, and I am pretty sure that it will be too late if I apply for the second Visa at a later time...
