Unemployed bankers flee to Buenos Aires

Has anyone seen this phenomenom much between their personal friends and contacts?

A friend of Mr. Webb’s had told him to come down and have a look. Within a day of arriving, he found himself dealing with more New York bankers than he does in New York.“You’d start the day at a park and then run into five former bankers, and then you’d wind up at a bar and all of a sudden there would be 15 of them,” Mr. Webb said. “Ex-bankers, ex-traders, Lehman guys, Bear guys, everyone. Guys that got screwed by their job and came to a place where everything was cheap. It’s fuckin’ beautiful and the sun was going down at 9:30.”

I'd like to Echo VT4ever's comments. Argentine women are incredibly good looking and the cost of living in Argentina is extremely low to someone armed with USD. The exchange rate between the Argentine peso and the USD went from 1:1 to 3:1 overnight when Argentina defaulted on its debt back in 2001. Since then, the exchange rate has been relatively steady at 3:1. However, in the past year, the rate has leaped to new highs to its current rate of 3.8:1. I can assure you, prices in Argentina have not adjusted to meet this currency change.

Second of all, I've actually witnessed the banker "move to BA post-analyst stint mentality." While none of my fellow analysts ultimately decided to do it, there was some very serious chatter about moving throughout the past year. For anyone looking for a change of pace in life, moving to BA is not the worst idea. Apparently it is also a great place to visit if you're the Governor of South Carolina...

One of my good friends left his (non-finance) job last year, moved down there and had a blast this past year.

I decided not to because I knew I'd never get anything done, but as someone said above, Argentina is basically the cheapest non-3rd-world relatively safe country around... so it's a good choice if you want to have fun on the cheap but also don't want to get mugged or wake up in a bathtub with your kidney missing.

Thought, the fact that there are so many bankers there now makes me want to avoid it...
