Unique Topics

Hi,

Here is another suggestion: you should force users to create Unique Topics about certain subjects and post all the questions related to this subject on the unique topic.

Example: you should create a unique topic "Interview Questions" in the IB Bullpen, where everybody could post their feedback and find some useful information. Instead of that, the same thread is created every two weeks, and it makes it very hard for prospective monkeys to find information when they need it.

Other examples (for IB Bullpen): Unique Topic for books about banking, Unique Topic for lifestyle in banking, Unique Topic for studies before banking, Unique Topic for each Bank, etc.

What I am suggesting is not new, it is widespread in the forums around the world, and I am certain it would allow WSO to be more successful. Moreover, it does not require any technical feature to be added, but only the moderators to force people to post in the right topics.

Hope I will be heard.

if what you're suggesting is deleting new topics that are created unless they are "unique" I don't think we have the moderator man-hours to do that.

We are, however, in the process of bringing out a lot more of the rich content in the archives by

1.) Improving the Search module. It is better now but we just found out today that the custom search engine from Google isn't indexing all of the appropriate old threads -- working on this now and it does work if you type "site:wallstreetoasis.com" after your search terms -- not a good solution so working on getting it right.

2) Meta-tags and Tag cloud. We will soon be retroactively going back and tagging many threads with meta-tags so that we can have a massive tag cloud in the footer about different popular topics. So when someone wants to read about brainteasers they can click on that tag cloud and be brought to the 10-20 threads about brainteasers...or Morgan Stanley, or layoffs, etc.

Ideally with a much improved Search Function and these Tags, most of our prospective monkeys will be able to find what they want fast and this will significantly reduce the # of repetitive threads.

Thanks, Patrick

Thanks for your answer.

However, I am not convinced by your "tag idea". Who will select the appropriate tags for each topic ? Moderators ? If so, it takes a lot more man-hours than my idea. Users ? You can't trust them. They will select the wrong ones, etc. Moderators will have too much work.

Here is my idea again: I am not suggesting that you forbid all the topics that dont fit in a Unique Topic, but only the ones that should be in one of them. For example: if someone in the IB Bullpen creates a topic about the sexual life of david feinbergh, it's not a problem. But if someone creates a topic with the question "What questions should i expect during the interview ?", then a moderator (or an informed forum user) tells him to check the Unique Topic that has been created by someone else, and that we can easily find because he named it "[Unique] Interview Questions" or something like that. At the beginning, it require some man-hours to help the people get used to it, but when the majority of users are aware that such topics exist, no new topics will be created for this.

The idea does not come from me. I saw it on a forum and it is REALLY awesome. You have big topics about important subjects and small topics about regular subjects. When you search a piece of information, you find the Unique Topic and EVERYTHING is in it.

My 2 cents.

Glabibou, this would be difficult to introduce and moderate. While it would ultimately get all of the similar topics into the same thread, I think we may want to continue to explore alternatives that are less time intensive or easier for the user base to understand and adapt to.

My apologies for the 2nd post, but also as a side point:

Meta-tags have been successfully implemented on an extremely large number of websites and are a proven tool for tracking topic relevancy. There will always be a few mischief makers, but the community as a whole usually responds well to them. In fact, I'm surprised how well communities typically respond to any sort of collective dependence on anonymous contribution (Wikipedia being a prime example).
