What are my chances of getting in to Front Office IB?

Hello,

I am an international candidate and I will be joining Baruch MSF program Fall 2016.

I am engineer + 2 years of work experience at a boutique portfolio management firm.

I am aware that I need to network a lot and I am prepared for it.

Would like to get some insights on how should I plan on coming to NYC ?

Thank you.

Honestly I'd say the chances aren't that great. IB is competitive enough to begin with, but you're at a non-target MSF and are a foreign national (Sponsorship Issues), so you're doubly disadvantaged from the start. The usual advice about networking applies, focus on building real relationships not just transactional interactions.

Not to discourage you and to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't even think about applying to the States. The chances are severely low as the posts above me mention. That being said, however, I would continue to focus on European banks as your school's reputation paired with good grades will most likely get you an internship there.

Definitely not the U.S., though.

Baruch landed about 20-25 ppl this year for ib (5 JPM, 5 BAML, 4 GS) this is for undergrad though, not sure about the masters program. Baruch is rising as a school and after landing 20+ ppl in ib for a couple years in a row I think it's safe to say it's a semi target.

Yeah but internationally? I could see them having a leg up due to NYC proximity but I just don't see them having traction overseas. Especially from an alumni network perspective.

I agree with Baruch's reputation not being great at all. How about one leveraging on its undergrad and MS Financial Engineering crowd for networking? I have made the decision and there's no going back for me. I am aware of all the points made by you guys and I agree with all of you. I still have my options open to go for an MBA after 2-3 years. I need your advice/feedback on networking in NYC and getting INTO IB.

Thank you again.

Man, look. Don't listen to the people on here saying you have no shot. Regardless of your background, getting into banking is extremely difficult. We all are facing or have faced an uphill battle breaking into Investment Banking.

Just because your situation may not be optimal doesn't mean it is impossible.

Work hard in your school's program, leverage any connections you may have, make new connections, cold email, cold call, apply to positions, prepare hard.
