Where to meet alumni to chat??

Hey guys, I've been lurking on WSO for a while but now I've got a question.

When you set up a networking meeting, where do you meet? Do you meet for coffee at a coffee shop (is Starbucks too cliche, or would a hipster-y cafe reflect poorly), or lunch at a restaurant (if so, then how nice does the restaurant have to be)? Is itAre you supposed to set the venue, or is it the alum who's going to choose time/+place? This would be for our first meeting...

Ask if they're available and if they give you a time frame, then tell them when you're available within that time frame. If they just say "next week," tell them some times that work for you and let them choose.

Meet for coffee. Doesn't really matter where. Can be starbucks or the financier or, if it's someone at Citi, one of the sick coffee shops right nearby. Just has to be close to their office. I've gotten lunch before but an analyst once told me that you generally want to ask to meet up for coffee because it sounds like a shorter time commitment than lunch. I sometimes ask "would you like to meet up for coffee or lunch?"

Often, I'd plan to meet them at their office and they'd meet me and bring me over to their coffee/lunch spot of choice. Other times, we'd set a location in the email to meet up. Sometimes they choose and sometimes you do. You can also suggest a spot (close to their office) but say you're open to meeting anywhere.

If you do go to lunch, I wouldn't suggest anywhere fancy. Don't go to McDonalds but don't go to Per Se or even Dishes. Something like Pax or Cafe Metro is probably fine. Also, they'll probably end up paying for you no matter where you go.

it's almost like meeting with any other person, ever. weird that....

I know you're being sarcastic, but that's actually what I'm worried about. I'm in college, and so the only people I meet are friends. I ask them if they want to eat at the dining hall, or if we should go to some restaurant, hang out at the mall, movies, go to the bar etc. I've just never really had to "meet" anybody whom I didn't really have no connection to (at least of my own volition) - the closest to that would be trying to chat up girls in the club or the person sitting next to me in the plane.

So: just email them saying "I'm interested in [insert industry/job here] and I'd really like to talk to you to learn more about it. Would you be willing to chat with with me over coffee some time this week?" And then set up a time, and meet at the nearest Starbucks?

dishes is so fucking good. the tahini noodles and moroccan eggplant salad and coconut chicken fingers with that green sauce

Right? Dishes is actually probably my favorite spot in NYC for lunch. Close second is probably Dig Inn. Everything is so tasty. Coconut chicken fingers are bangin. I can't wait to get back to NYC in July.

Are you bros being serious right now? Dishes is a circus. There's like 500 people squished into a cramped space, with like 4 tables to sit. Some of their food is okay, but ridiculously overpriced. Also, "Dig Inn" tried to redeem themselves by having their name changed from Pump. Too bad their food still tastes like plastic.

If you can't relate to anything I said, why would you assign any value to which places I prefer? Doesn't make much sense bro.

I'm pretty much sick and tired of all the lunch spots near my office, and Midtown Lunch doesn't help much. Considering just trekking over to 53 and 6 every day to get some imposter halal from those bros that lurk around there during the day, and just lather on 3-4 layers of white sauce to make it edible without a steady flow of alcohol coursing through your veins.

Come on, this shouldn't be a question. Just go to a starbucks or whatever generic coffee shop is the most convenient- they won't care if it is trendy- the point is to talk to you. Agree with above- wouldn't usually do lunch, as that just seems like a longer time commitment for them. If I had to do lunch I would do some sort of cafe/sandwich place (this is more personal preference).
