Which Post-College job would look better for an mBA?
Hi all, I'm a senior at UC Berkeley majoring in Public Health and Psychology (although I took several stats classes). I have a good GPA: 3.84. I have two job offers. One is to be a Business Development Consultant for Oracle Corporation and another is to be a "Data Analyst" for a health-tech startup in the Bay called Zocdoc with $35million in annual revenue.
The BDC role for Oracle is business development, marketing, and sales, with advancement options into inside sales (Account Executive Roles in high-tech enterprise software sales), marketing, or solutions consulting positions. The pay is pretty good, and be pretty high if you go the sales route.
The data analyst role at Zocdoc has promotion opportunities to be a "associate data scientist" in the future. The pay is good as well, although Zocdoc is a relatively low-profile smaller company with little name recognition.
What do you recommend ?
So I've heard...
Cons: Oracle's BDC role sucks dick, cannot emphasis this enough. Oracle sales department in general has all of the tell tale signs of being a division that is too bloated to operate. Huge inefficiencies, takes forever to get a hold of anyone internally to move a deal. Middle management is lazy, uninspiring, and unhelpful / even manipulative. You'll also receive little to no mentoring when you're in the role.
To provide some numbers, the BDC role has a 70-80% churn rate for first year hires. Not because the new hires are fired... but because they leave. Oracle recruiting also lies about compensation in interviews, expect to earn about 20% (10-15 grand) less than what they say. End of the quarter bonuses get cut on the regular, and few people ever hit their quotas on the floor.
It's also no marketing, and all cold calling.
Pros: Oracle caries a large name and is a great trampoline to jump into other roles. I've heard of people staying for one year and bouncing off to Bulge bracket banks, and Consulting gigs. If you thrive in the environment, and stick the role out for 4 - 6 years, you can also make some big money.
On top of that... you'll become very resilient, great at pitching over the phone, and a pro at leaving voicemails.
Thank you so much for the detailed reply!! I'll definitely think hard about the pros and cons, do additional research, and reach out to current BD ppl at Oracle. There is the prospect of making a ton of money if you sell, and it can be a good stepping stone to greener pastures.
Would you say that it'd look better than the data scientist role at the health-tech company if I wanted to get an MBA? Would Oracle be viewed as "more prestigious" compared to the other role?
I don't know enough about the data analyst role to say for certain, I'm also not an expert on MBA admissions. You may want to reach out to an MBA advisor, I know they make posts on WSO frequently. My gut feeling is that they'll tell you it doesn't matter so long as you make steady vertical progress at either company, and actively engage outside of work to improve your community.
I've always liked smaller companies, they generally offer more opportunities for personal growth and development.
