Electoral College Math

First things first: Jim Cramer is a moron.

This guy needs to really hang his hat and stop making predictions. I read on the Washington Post website that Cramer not only thinks that the Democrats will pick up 35 seats to take back the majority in the House of Representatives, but also that Barry will defeat Mittens in the Electoral College by a whopping 440-98. This is about the same margin by which war hero Dwight Eisenhower spanked Adlai Stevenson in 1952 (442-89). What would it take for Obama to win by such a margin?

Playing around with CNN’s interactive map, the closest I could get to this result is Barry winning everything except Alaska and the Deep South. If I were looking for an accurate prediction of what an Obama victory would look like, I’d be more apt to go with the Langley High School 12th grade government class’s prediction of 290-248.

My own prediction is that Ohio and Florida will break red and put Romney in a good position to win it all, but by a very small margin. I also believe that we won’t know the winner right away, but also that it won’t be Bush/Gore all over again.

Romney over Obama 280-258 is Olaf’s prediction. What does the rest of WSO think?

Markets (betting and financial) suggest with pretty high certainty that Big Barry wins. I'm going with that. Looks like Obama will take Ohio and Florida, so game over for Romnizzle

To where? Seriously where can you go? Singapore maybe? If they'll take you. S. Korea? God knows not Europe.

Fucking sick of all these liberals threatening to leave America if Romney wins.

I think we should have a program where liberal American who believe that G > 25% of GDP should be allowed to move to statist countries like Canada and most of Europe, and their young conservatives who are sick of their governments be allowed to move here. People swap.

I know several people from France/Germany who would love to get a chance to live in America.

There should be an automatic system to keep G

I've had a gut feeling that Obama's gonna win... with the trend of re-electing of Presidents lately and the whole hatred of rich people that's sprung up over the past couple years

There should be an automatic system to keep G QE because that expedites monetary collapse. Let's get it over with...c'mon, the US can make this happen in 5-10 years if it just tries a bit harder. Just give me enough time to hoard some gold first. Some form of monetary collapse could hopefully galvanize Texas to secede so I can move there. Then the experiment you mentioned could actually play out.

This post is awesome, hilarious, and really makes me want to go home and watch Doomsday Preppers. Just out of curiousity why hoard gold though? If you think about gold, it really isn't going to be valuable after a collapse. It provides value during the fear of the collapse stage. The collapse happens and everyone tries to unwind their positions, forcing gold prices to plummet. I'm not saying to stick in the dollar or anything. Looking at history, gold is a good long term investment, since it is seen as a form of reserve currency, but it gets inflated during the pre-collapse times. (for more information on the commodities bubble, i've found Jesse Colombo's blog to be informative, although probably a little over the top. http://www.thebubblebubble.com/commodities-bubble/ )

On another note, if anarchy really did break out I would not trade you my food and water supplies, tools, guns and ammunitiion, or much of anything for all the gold in the world. The gold does me no good during a time when survival becomes the daily concern.

Hey friend, I formally invite you to Texas. I have availability to a very large spread, Texas talk for land, and several guns/ammo so we'll be good to go if there is a financial collapse/zombie apocalypse.

Yea, pretty sad that America is considered like the last bastion of conservatism. I mean that in the all-encompassing sense, considering a lot of countries are more free economically. Like I said to my father (who thinks that 4 more years of Obama = apocalypse) it honestly probably won't matter. It's gonna be conservative change (hopefully if Romney wins and doesn't auto-betray the Republicans) vs. 4 years of pretty much nothing. The Republicans in the House are gonna have a greater majority and are gonna block any huge legislation by Obama. Executive orders and foreign policy are just about all Obama can do. (the latter of which I actually like of his)

Reality hits you hard, bro...

All good points, because like your tagline says, reality is hitting me hard, bro. But really, not sure why I'm getting so wrapped up in it.

how is that epic? it's a trend

Met a BSD early in the evening. He brought up the election topic and predicted Omaba would win. 'Changing leadership during downturn is too risky.' Epic...on so many levels.

Yeah, because American voters think like a Board of Directors. Did you get to put it in your mouth while he told you how the world works?

Obama for another 4 years is a slippery slope towards socialism and maybe communism, having the majority of the lower class/non working voters give control of the country back to the people is plain stupid. You don't see successful corporations being run puppets controlled by their associates.

I love people who now think the world is going to end because Obama was reelected, completely ignoring the reality of the past 4 years...

Honestly. My hopes aren't too high in regard to our economy in the future (well, I at least thought Mitt could handle it better), but I don't feel like the US is going to implode within the next four years.

My point was it's setting a precident that could lead to socialism. The reality of the last four year is that we aren't much better off.

Sports books had Obama as an 80% favorite or better all week. I have no idea why anyone uses any other measure to predict an outcome.

PetEng:
What percentage of the country do you think is far right? 40%?
Far right, as well as far-left, is a state of mind. If you believe that the president is an extremist and 52% of the country agrees with him, and he's not doing anything to violate the constitution, and he's less liberal than FDR, or less conservative than Reagan, he's probably not an extremist.

I was a Democrat in '04. I have since moved around a lot largely leaning libertarian.

In December 2004, after Kerry lost to Bush, the party leadership decided to regroup around a theme they knew most voters would agree with:

"We should stop the country from becoming a police state. And we need to avoid a war with Iran."

"If you are pro-life, if you like low taxes, if you like corporations, if you love coal mining, c'mon in! Join us! Just, you agree with us on avoiding a war with Iran, right?"

The equivalent for Republicans would be to regroup around

"We need to stop the country from going bankrupt."

"We will let everything that reduces the deficit and that we can add amendments to to the Senate and House floors."

"We will support rational infrastructure spending as long as we will either need to fund it later at a higher price or as long as it is projected to grow the PV of tax revenues more than it will cost us. But we will not continue funding consumption and Democratic pet projects that are pushing us into national bankruptcy."

Then we need to find some scientifically and economically valid wedge issues:

-Yucca Mountain -Replacing unemployment benefits with infrastructure spending. -Reducing public pension benefits in states that are going bankrupt.
-Refusing to bail out mismanaged employee-run pensions at more than 50 cents on the dollar. -Raising the retirement age for everyone to 70.

We need an agenda. One that has a lot of wedge issues for Democrats in it, but one that is clearly the right thing to do from an economic perspective.

Yucca Mountain is probably the easiest wedge issue to run on. Run a whole bunch of commercials in states with nuclear reactors (IL, NJ, PA), and ask why Democrats in the Senate aren't voting for funding. Show pictures of shuttered- and rusting Russian reactors, play scary music, and state that if Sen. X won't let us safely bury the waste in Nevada, maybe we should bury it in his backyard instead.
