Off Season Interning
What are the odds I could convince a small firm to let me on as an intern during the off season? Does cold calling work for interning like it has for some looking for jobs?
I am coming off of active duty this fall and have almost three months of vacation saved up; we never vacation in our careers either. It would be a pretty sweet deal to have a steady income while interning. Right now my office is giving me 0 projects to work on, letting me focus on preparing to get out. I am using my time until October to network, study finance methodology, and applying to MBA/MS Finance programs. I have enough cash to cover being out of work for more than a year. This will allow me to intern at more than one place, building a better resume/contacts along the way.
My preference is to remain in the DC area, so I have begun researching places around here. That is how I found the oasis. Have been reading the old threads and taking notes as I plan out the next few months.
Step One: Attending the WSO Conference
Step Two: Let you know when I get there

A 10.452334624% chance. I ran the numbers, consulted a few industries pros and this is what I came up with.
FYI - Networking and cold calling is always a good thing.
Good luck. And, honestly, thank you for your service.
Definitely doable. I would
Definitely doable. I would focus on firms with employees that have some connection with the military- whether they be ROTC, West Point, support of military related charities etc. They tend to stick together and help each other out. You have another advantage in that you're looking for experience (not a job) with a defined exit (grad school) so it's less of a commitment on that end. Targeted cold calling would probably work best, but put some thought into what you want to do post school so you have a more convincing pitch. This will also help you with recruiting in school so you can say something like "I haven't had fulltime finance experience, but knew I wanted to do IB so did an unpaid analyst position pre school etc." This+military experience+good grad school will make you a very competitive candidate. Good luck.
