What is your favorite College Food?

Hello Monkeys,

The title says it all. Tell me about your favorite food you ate when you came home drunk out of your mind or with the munchies at 2 am and you could barely move, or some of the 5 dollar 5 star meals that you lived off of in college during exam season. If none of that relates to you, at least comment what your favorite instant noodle brand was.

The absolute best place to get food back in college was a tex-mex spot a couple miles from campus. It closed at 2AM but on some days was open until 4AM. Those Fridays / Saturdays, making a drunken/stoned journey over there after partying or otherwise gallivanting through the night, were legendary.

The best thing they had was a burrito with 1/2 pound of beef in it. It was the nasty kind of cheap ground beef that you know is terrible for you, and they load it with cheese, lettuce, tomato, some special sauce they have, and who knows what else. Truly, the most disgusting thing imaginable. The best part? All of that for just $4 and change. Taco Bell was out of its league.

I used to go to this killer place in high school called Juanitas. Carne Asada. Real cheap. In Leucadia (SoCal). Its still there, had one this year. Still fantastic.

I've never been to Cookout, but I see new places popping up everywhere. Is this a new thing - what do you get there?

I heard this places is good. Only time I saw one was passing through some Texas airport. The line was brutal and I opted for some nice sit down restaurant that probably was 4x as much.

I gotta try it sometime.

All of their specialty burgers are really good. Plus you can can get all of their burgers on Texas toast, their own branded and packaged spicy ketchup, honey butter chicken biscuit as mentioned below. All really solid drunk or sober.

Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker.

I never lived in a dorm while in college, but I did live in a dorm/off-campus housing for a year a year out of college. Staying with my now-wife, sharing the 4B/2B she got on her full ride with 3 other girls.... riveting times. Anyway, this spot was across the street:

https://www.yelp.com/biz/joy-yees-noodle-shop-chicago-2

And this is a rare exception where the non-Chinatown location is better. Their bubble tea was some shit we had a lot. Also, a lot of fucking liquor cause my life was shit at the time.

I'd also get a bag of charcoal and grill in the quad sometimes. Shit was dope.

Living with girls wasn't the issue. The issues were:

-I was working a job I hated and had just started probation and couldn't leave it (now I can and will soon) -I was biking to work every day all winter and would arrive every day with completely numbed out hands and feet. Somehow didn't crash -I wasn't technically supposed to be there so I had to sign in/out any time I came or went. Felt trapped and unwelcome -Had to sleep sardine style (head to foot) with now-wife to fit on the bed -Had no TV, just a laptop I had to periodically submerge in rice to keep it working, barely any money (job was my only income and wife was in college), and couldn't leave the state -No hope or prospects. Had no idea how I was going to break out of the rat race -No hobbies really. Just a lot of drinking

Don't know how we stayed together through that and a bunch of other shit but life is 1000X better now and getting better every day.

Those girls did fucking hate me though. One was an Indian pre-pharm chick who was violently LGBTQwhatever, but also violently not independent. Didn't know how to cook ANYTHING. Her mommy would bring over tupperwares of Indian food every week. And she would put on the biggest act. No alcohol was to be seen. No mention of anything gay. Etc. Clearly hated the idea of pharm. SAD. One of the other chicks was this little Puerto Rican chick who was way cooler than the Indian but also gay and was dating the Indian for a while. Then they broke up and both started bringing other girls home and shit got weird. I fell asleep many nights to the sounds of weird little gay girls moaning behind the wall.

Probably Chinese. We were allowed to order on Wednesday nights and I'd get 2 Chinese meals and eat one at night and one in the morning before physical training.

There was a food truck that made the absolute best pepperoni pizza cheesesteaks. It was always well-placed in the parking lot next to my fraternity house. Many a pound was gained.

When I'm in town, after a house party or the club, we would always go to either IHop or Steak n' Shake at 4 AM. The double guacamole burger at Steak n' Shake for $5 was amazing.

When I'm in college, we just go and get sub sandwiches from this place that puts mozzarella sticks and french fries in their subs.

If you're from New York (or any big city), your "favorite" food is probably what's closest. Like out the lobby and around the corner. For me, it was this Chinese place called Vanessa's dumplings. 14th St and 3rd Ave, in Gramercy. Best teriyaki noodles for those 2am cravings.

A sit down Mexican restaurant that was open till 4AM (only sit down place open that late), and the food was shitty but just so many good memories of the shitshow that my friends and I would cause. We literally would roll thirty people deep into this tiny restaurant with seating for 20 people and just take over. One of my friends puked in the kitchen one time, but for some reason they kept serving us hahaha

My favorite college food? I'm a huge fan of the University of South Burrito. North Burrito State is too plain for my taste, U of South Burrito is where all the hot new sauce admits dribble down.

Simple dishes that I cook - cooking for yourself is cheaper, easier, tastier, and healthier.

Family taught me 20 dishes the summer before college like chicken soup, fried rice, dosa, dumplings, hot dogs, garlic bread, etc... It kept me in shape, didn't blow my budget, and I learned a vital life lesson that too few people know how to do in 2017.

used to be so poor that i would buy a beef brisket curry on rice for US$8 + extra rice for US$2 and try to split this into three meals for a day. https://www.yelp.com/menu/new-malaysia-new-york-3/item/curry-beef-brisk…

Sometimes is the Hainanese Chicken for US$5 and do split them into three meals again. https://www.yelp.com/biz/curry-leaves-flushing?osq=Hainanese+Chicken+Ri…

Those were good days. Bad days, Shin Ramyun Ramen every meal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_Ramyun.

So everyone was poor but ordered takeaway? Yeah, right. When we used to get by on $60 a month the best dorm meal was dumplings with sour cream. Probably there was like 0.01% meat in there, but who cares if it's hot.

yo so I can't PM you, but I saw an older post about you talking about frats being a huge role in banking recruiting for mcintire. i'm in a frat, but not the top ones like dke, elmo, phi psi.

i'm going to be a rising sophomore, have a very strong gpa and an internship, but I was wanted to hear your perspective about recruiting and if I should be fine. i was looking through linkedin and a lot of the BB analysts were in above frats (or in similar sororities like tri delt, theta, and even zta)

every time i see this thread, im a bit irked that somebody said pussy before i could i get this impulse to jump in and say pussy, but somebody already did it and got all the accolades

The fact that you put cumulative GPA might save your ass. Might. Pretty dishonest to only put one school down, but add GPA/awards from another one.

People like you give transfers a bad name.

Hey man, I understand why you think I'm giving transfers a bad name but I'm not trying to be dishonest here. My resume states what institution those awards were given at and the company and HR knows that I transferred schools.

frooter:

were you not aware that GPA from schools do not transfer?

I'm plenty aware. My purpose of doing this was to give an accurate overview of my grades throughout my 4 years in college instead of breaking it down into 2 separate "institutions" underneath my education. I originally had it as two schools with two separate GPAs but I was advised not to do that multiple times.

they're not going to rescind your offer for stating a 3.6 vs a 3.5. wouldn't worry too much. it honestly takes a lot of effort to find good people. you've already proven to them that you have what it takes to get an offer. a 3.5 gpa is not bad at all. that would be dumb of them to do take your offer away and a potentially good hire.

Giordano's is mediocre deep dish. Lou Malnatti's, Edwardo's, Pequod's, and the Art of Pizza are better choices.

This, plus Gino's East. Portillo's (hot dogs/Italian beef), Carson's and Twin Anchors (bbq), Gibson's (steak)

And Skyline chili is vastly overrated.

If you didn't grow up with it, you're probably not gonna like it. If you did, there's no better meal on the planet.

I'd add Graeter's ice cream to the list of Cincinnati foods. Oprah named it her favorite ice cream of all time, and you can now find it in a few Whole Foods and specialty grocers around the country.

Hainanese Chicken Rice (Good shit, nothing to do with the Hainanese whatsoever) Carrot Cake (unlike the western type, this one is actually fried radish cakes. Savoury)

I'm not really aware of any "famous" foods from Denver (Rocky Mountain Oysters, maybe? Also, microbreweries, but that doesn't count as food). We have a lot of great foods from, well, everywhere. Here's my short list of places, in no particular order, that you have to try and eat at, all of which I've been to:

  • means one of my top 10

Burgers: -Park Burger* -H Burger -Juicy Burgers and Dogs -Highland Tap and Burger

Philly cheesesteaks: -Taste of Philly

Pizza: -Pudge Brothers (chain) -Papou's -Pizzeria Locale -Anthony's

Breakfast: -Jelly -Gaia Bistro -Snooze* -Breakfast King (24 hours)

"American": -My Brother's Bar* -Table 6 -Fruition -Mizuna -Vesta Dipping Grill (bomb fondue) -Trillium (Scandinavianish)

Sushi: -Sushi Den -Land of Sushi -Sushi Sasa

Eclectic: -Linger

Ice Cream: -Glacier -Bonnie Brae

French: -Z Cuisine -Bistro Vendome

Middle Eastern: -Jerusalem's (though it seems it's kinda gone downhill... wouldn't go outta my way for this) -Marrakesh Restaurant (friend owns it, solid Lebanese food, but not the best I've ever had tbh) -Damascus Restaurant

I didn't even try to name a bunch of types of food just because I don't eat them (the most notable would be Mexican, huge presence in Denver; also, Italian, because it's just not the same as Italy... duh).

DM - I'm sure there are a few, but any places known for Elk burger off the top of your head? I went to one in Denver and it was phenomenal.

CityGrille and Paramount Cafe both have it. I've never tried it at City, but the Paramount one was solid ~2 years ago.

Also, Buffalo Restaurant on the way up to the mountains in Idaho Springs has some amazing Buffalo burgers: http://www.buffalorestaurant.com/menu_burgers.php
