Happy Hour Recap: December

Mod Note (Andy): The next NYC HH is coming up on Jan 10th, 8pm, at the Galway Hooker's Guinness Room (upstairs). More info to come soon

”Best one yet. Left a little before midnight…got trashed.” - @"karypto"
“These need to happen more often—like twice a month, not once a month!”
– Multiple WSO Monkeys

Lately, I’ve been getting an increasing number of requests to have WSO Happy Hours in New York more often. If happy hours are all as well attended and successful as this last one was, that’s a distinct possibility.

Admittedly, my first impression was that this one would be a dud. We had selected a new Midtown venue, 48 Lounge (on 48th Street across from the Financier). Along with a different crowd from the Galway Hooker, this meant a dramatic increase in the price of drinks from the specials we were normally used to. @"IlliniProgrammer" would have had a heart attack. And because the venue had “lost” our reservation, we settled for a few tables near the front of the bar.

I introduced two monkeys who had answered my call for new Happy Hour Chairs, and although we were the first ones to arrive, we soon had about 25 people in attendance, with a good mix of professionals and older students. I was especially pleased to meet @"happypantsmcgee" and welcome back @"TheKing" , who could only be described as “high on life.”

There was good Christmas cheer all around, and numerous monkeys complimented the choice of venue as it was closer to where they worked.

Some of the conversations I remember having included a real-life career advice thread with happypantsmcgee, and a serious discussion with @TheKing about how one could possibly get paid to just drink and meet new people (we’re still figuring out how to turn that into a career). The Lounge also had an excellent Ommegang Hennepin available--@"Zargo", make sure you check that brewery out next time you’re in Cooperstown.

The leader of an undergraduate finance society had led his group into town from Cincinnati and dropped by to shake a few hands, introduce himself, and tell us how excited he was to organize a group of about twenty attendees to next year’s WSO Conference.

Then of course, the rounds of tequila shots started happening. You always know it’s been a good Happy Hour when you end up leaving over two hours after you had originally planned to.

I’ll turn it over to @happypantsmcgee for the final word, which he uttered as a round of inviting tequila shots made their appearance. He raised the thin shot glass with a smirk and said,

“To WSO…even better in real life!”

Another shout out to the guy who got me and the other dude in to 1Oak. For a Tuesday night event, I partied until Wednesday morning. Even better, my review was the next day. In case you were wondering I got a huge raise. Oh, and I got laid two days later. But I don't think the happy hour had anything to do with that. How's that for some holiday gloating? I say bring on the NYC happy hours to once a month to test the waters.

Question: I notice most of you on WSO don't use your real name as your username. If I went to one of these, do I call you by your username or your real name? Or is there a mix of how people handle that? I would just feel a little awkward calling someone 'In The Flesh' instead of Lars (or whatever your name is).

Pretty sure there's a mix. Some people call him ITF and others resort to his actual name. I've been called my real name, my nickname, "chic", and "C&T". Most people introduce themselves by real name + username (if it's a recognizable one) and then you can choose whichever you want to use.

Though, Mr. Dick Fuld, I don't suppose anyone would have any trouble distinguishing between your username and your real name.

Currently: future neurologist, current psychotherapist Previously: investor relations (top consulting firm), M&A consulting (Big 4), M&A banking (MM)

Had a fantastic time, will definitely be in attendance to many more of these. Although things got a bit fuzzy after the tequila shots...

Btw, did anyone happen to get the contact information of the Alvarez & Marsal guy I cajoled into coming over? Drunk Me could have sworn I saved his email in my phone somewhere but Sober Me can't find it anywhere...

@DickFuld : Mr. Fuld, we expect your attendance. @karypto : the NYC happy hours already are once a month; did you mean something else? @chicandtoughness : I assure you it is not, as I know exactly who @fearless is talking about.
