Moving to Strategy

Hello,

I have been working with Deloitte Strategy and Operations for a year now. I want to make a move to strategy as the technology related projects are not driving my motivation. I am PMP certified and went through a core banking transformation and another PMO establishment project so now I am labelled with implementations and PMOs (very very boring). My experience prior to joining Deloitte was in a company I founded myself and ran for 2.5 years (still active and running, just a dispute with my partner over the next 5 years vision and I decided to leave)

I want to move to strategy (weather in consulting or in the industry), by strategy i dont mean feasibility studies (also very boring). I mean everything else.

My questions are the following:

1. Do i need any sort of finance background? I am an engineer (Industrial) with no real finance background
2. Do i move to strategy arms of consulting or industry? share your experiences please :)
3. If i do need a solid finance base, what do you recommend? CFA level 1? just general knowledge? get experience with finance?

Anything other input is highly appreciate it and I thank everyone in advance for your help.

Thanks :)

to be honest implementations and executions are not what gets me excited.. putting a strategy, innovating, solving a problem, set a plan to do achieve better performance is what i find exciting as opposed to documenting an issue and raising it to the steering committee..

in my core transformation experience, doing the strategy was the best part.. from process reengineering, to system requirements to change management was just the best time of my life.. when we went on ground though.. oh god.. project management training to logs to committees to employees lying about their progress.. it was ugly

so my goal is step out of implementations and execution of strategies and focus on just strategies :)

What part of the world are you in? I know it's very difficult to transfer from tech to S&O in the US without re-branding with an MBA, but it might be different from where you're from. I can't think of any strategy consulting firm that would value a CFA, the MBA is the most common post-grad degree, but again, I'm only speaking from the US perspective.

Are saying you are an S&O consultant but have mostly been staffed on implementation projects, and want to do more strategy? If that's the case, just network with the partners/managers staffing strategy projects, as long as your ratings are decent you should be able to break in that way (but if that's the case, all your questions about finance make less sense). Or are you looking to leave Deloitte and asking about exit opportunities in other consulting firms and/or F500 corporate strategy? From your posts it doesn't appear English is your first language (and I mean that in a completely non-condescending way) that's why I suggested sharing what country your in, so people can give more specific advice. Hope that helps.

i started at Deloitte m.e. and moved to Deloitte US shortly after. yes i am in s&o and been staffed on mainly on transformation projects which include strategy of the transformation programs to include everything (process reengineering, target operating model, change management, etc etc..

yes i am asking about exit opportunities to strategy focused firms or preferably industry corporate strategy positions.

i've been posting on from my phone, thats why my writing is weak :) but you're right english is not my first language :)
