Sophomore in College wanting to break into Management Consulting

Hey,

I just finished my sophomore year at an SEC school with a 4.0. I am studying finance and management with a minor in economics and data analytics.

I am working this summer as an M&A intern at a small firm.

I am the president of my fraternity and have had many other experiences.

How can I break into consulting and grab that summer 2025 internship?

Feel free to grill me if needed lol

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can position yourself for a summer 2025 internship in management consulting:

  1. Leverage Your Current M&A Internship: Utilize your current internship to gain relevant skills that can be transferred to consulting. Focus on developing strong analytical skills, understanding business processes, and honing your ability to synthesize complex information into actionable insights.

  2. Network Aggressively: Since you're at an SEC school, take advantage of alumni networks. Reach out to alumni who are currently in consulting. Use LinkedIn and your school’s career services to connect with professionals in the field. Networking can often lead to referral opportunities which are invaluable in the consulting world.

  3. Leadership Experience: Your role as the president of your fraternity is a great talking point. Emphasize your leadership skills, ability to manage teams, and any significant achievements under your presidency. Consulting firms value candidates with strong leadership and team management skills.

  4. Academic Excellence: Continue maintaining your high GPA and take courses relevant to consulting. Courses in strategy, operations management, and advanced data analytics will be particularly useful. Your minor in economics and data analytics is already a strong suit—highlight this in your applications.

  5. Case Competitions and Relevant Extracurriculars: Participate in case competitions. These are not only great for honing your problem-solving skills but also help you gain visibility in front of potential employers. Additionally, involvement in relevant clubs such as a consulting club or finance society can be beneficial.

  6. Prepare for Case Interviews: Start preparing for case interviews early. Use resources like WSO’s Consulting Case Interview Prep to practice. You might also consider booking mock interviews with professionals through platforms like WSO to get real-time feedback.

  7. Apply Broadly and Early: Keep an eye on internship application timelines and apply as soon as applications open. Consulting firms often have early recruiting cycles, so being prepared ahead of time is crucial.

Remember, persistence and preparation are key. Keep building your profile, and don’t hesitate to reach out for guidance along the way. Good luck!

What SEC school? Recruiting opportunities would be very different at Georgia and Florida compared to something like Tennessee or Ole Miss. See if you can find out either through your own research or your school's career center what firms recruit on campus.

Have you already started doing things? Recruiting for MBB firms happens during the summer, and most other internship recruiting happens during the fall. If you haven't already, you should start networking, working on case prep, and working on behavioral interviews.

Would definitely try to see if you can connect with alums of your school and fraternity who are working at firms you are interested in. If you don't know which firms you are interested in, now would be a good time to be researching what different firms do
