Interview
Spoke with the hiring manager for a portfolio role. Very pleasant experience. They were very humble and gave me very positive feedback.

The next round with a team member was not pleasant at all.
The interviewer started off with although my name is ****, I am actually from Vienna. Had some complexes over his nationality which made me no wonder why I got rejected.

Qs:
1st round: was behavioral and what I was doing at my previous role. How did I make all the industry changes in my career and the way I learnt to prep for new roles.

2nd round: How do you get an estimate of portfolio value when the markets are closed. etc.
Interview Questions
Nothing out of the ordinary. Typical for a quant-flavored role.

Interview
Applied online by submitting a CV and cover letter. The process included three behavioral interviews:

A 30-minute interview with the hiring manager.
A 45-minute interview with two associates, which included a case study.
A 45-minute interview with a director and VP.

All communication regarding scheduling and next steps was managed through the hiring manager.

Timeline:
The hiring manager reached out within a month of submitting the application to schedule the first interview. This initial interview lasted 30 minutes and consisted of rapid-fire questions such as: Why Dodge & Cox? Why this program? What role do you take in a team? Describe a time you received criticism.

The second interview, held three weeks later, lasted 45 minutes and included a 10-minute case study alongside behavioral questions like:

We are a company with an entrepreneurial mindset—how do you feel about taking on extra work outside of your internship projects?
How did you handle a time when you didn’t get along with a teammate?
How would your professors describe you?
Give an example of a time when you had to learn a skill quickly. How did you approach it?

The third interview occurred one week after the second. This interview also focused on behavioral questions, but the interviewers pressed for more detailed and specific examples.

Advice:
The firm takes great pride in its unique culture, which differentiates it from other asset management firms. According to a current employee:
“Dodge & Cox has a unique, close-knit community, and particularly the strong commitment to collaboration, continuous learning, and integrity. I think these qualities truly set Dodge & Cox apart in the investment management industry. Once employees join, they typically never leave.”

When preparing for interviews, emphasize these cultural values and provide concrete examples from your experience that align with collaboration, learning, and integrity.
Interview Questions
We are a company with an entrepreneurial mindset, how do you feel about taking on extra work outside of your internship projects?
I’d be very enthusiastic about taking on extra work outside of my core internship projects. I see it as an opportunity to learn more about the broader business, contribute in new ways, and develop my own skills. In previous roles, such as my marketing internship at Heliosand, I took on additional tasks like creating a pitch deck collateral for a Series A investment round outside of my initial responsibilities of redesigning their new website and conducting market research. Taking on this extra task taught me how to create compelling pitch decks. I learnt how to highlight problems being addressed, how our company's technology was the solution, and finally the potential applications and market opportunity. I found that the extra work not only equipped me with new skills but also gave me valuable insights into other areas of the business within the company. I’d approach any additional projects with the same level of commitment and curiosity as my primary tasks, seeing them as a chance to deepen my understanding and make a meaningful impact.
Describe a time when you took the initiative to address a problem that wasn’t your responsibility.
During my internship at [blank], I noticed that our investor materials didn’t clearly explain the technical parts of our solar technology. Even though it wasn’t part of my job responsibility, I decided to talk to my manager who suggested I meet with the engineering team to make the descriptions easier to understand. The change was well-received, and it was a reminder that sometimes it’s worth stepping up and suggesting improvements, even if it’s outside your official role.
Can you describe a time when new information emerged, requiring you to adopt an unusual or creative approach to address the situation? Please explain the specific steps you took.
Situation:
As a Youth Ambassador for [non-profit name], a nonprofit addressing short-term solutions for homelessness in [city], I worked closely with the organization for several years. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, [non-profit name] could no longer carry out its primary service of assembling care packages with essential items (e.g., water, socks, nonperishable foods) due to restrictions on in-person gatherings. This posed a critical challenge to supporting the homeless community during an already difficult time.
Task:
I was tasked with finding a way to continue [non-profit name]’ mission despite the restrictions, ensuring that care packages could still be created and distributed while prioritizing the safety of everyone involved.
Action:
To address this, I proposed and organized a virtual Zoom care package event in collaboration with [non-profit name] and my school. The idea was to engage the school community in a safe, structured service event. Each year group was assigned to a separate breakout room, allowing students to socialize virtually with their peers while packing care packages from their homes.
In preparation, I created and distributed detailed instructions on what to include in the packages, such as essential basics like socks and food. On the event day, parents and students participated enthusiastically, resulting in a strong sense of community and collaboration. Additionally, I implemented a safe drop-off system where participants could deliver completed packages to the school, and Urban Angels partnered with Project Homeless Connect to ensure their distribution to those in need.
Result:
The event exceeded expectations, with over 2,700 care packages created and safely distributed to the homeless community. Beyond achieving the goal, the initiative strengthened community bonds, brought families together during isolation, and provided a creative, scalable solution to an unprecedented challenge.

Pretty typical LO interview process. Start with an HR phone screen. Then speak with an senior RA. Then a round with the industry analyst/PM. Some technical case questions are included here. Then invited on site for a series of 1x1 and 2 case interviews. If it is competitive, there will be an additional round. The last round looked more like a vibe check for me.
Interview Questions
The case interview with the PM was slightly unconventional.

Interviewer seemed visibly tired, yawning often, and overall disinterested in the experience. I was able to skip the initial phone screening through networking through my diversity organizations. I interviewed with an experienced analyst at the firm. A bunch of behaviorals followed by a few basic accounting technicals.

First, I had a one-on-one interview with a nice lady. She really liked my answers because I got the email for the second round in about 30 minutes. For the second round, they had sent me info about a company that I examined before the interview. During the second interview, they asked personal and technical questions. Then, we talked about the case study. Lastly, they presented another case study regarding the financial statements of 4 companies. Probably got dinged after that round because have not heard back in about ~1 month (though the lady from the first mentioned that 2/6 spots were already filled).
