To prepare yourself for interviews, especially in LO, it's probably going to be tough to find a specific guide that will allow you to know exactly how to interview. Here's what I did to prepare, and it worked for me. I currently work at a well-known LO AM company now.

  • Prepare a series of stock pitches for yourself (4 buy pitches and 1 sell pitch). Present these to friends, family, etc. and make sure you know them in and out, because you most likely will be asked about your investment philosophy at some point in the interview process. Be able to articulate this philosophy.
  • Have a really good reason to go into AM. Think about what you want for your career in the next many (say ~5 years) and how the summer internship will put you on the path for that career or other form of education (BSCH). Articulate this in writing, and practice telling others this part of your story.
  • Read the Wall Street Journal every day, and get a great sense of the markets. You should be able to have a solid, well-founded, concise, and clear opinion about every sector in the equity markets.
  • Read up about every company you apply to. Get a sense of what their strongest areas are and point out where your wishes for a career and their strengths align. This will make you seem knowledgable about the field and appear to be an attractive candidate.
