Canadian AM Comp (Big 5/Pension/Boutque)

I’m having trouble finding comps on AM in Canada especially from Big 5, everyone seems to know comps for other high finance roles but AM seems to be difficult to know.

How does comp very between the teams in AM (Sales,Distribution,Investments etc)

Would love to hear from Canadians(Toronto,Vancouver,Calgary,Montreal) previously or currently in AM.

Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of Asset Management (AM) compensation in Canada across different types of firms and roles:

1. Big 5 Bank Asset Management:

  • Base Salary: Entry-level analysts typically earn around $65k-$75k, with bonuses in the range of 10%-20% of base salary.
  • Bonus Structure: Bonuses are often tied to individual performance, team performance, and overall firm performance.
  • Roles & Variance: Compensation can vary significantly depending on the team:
    • Sales/Distribution: These roles often have a higher bonus potential due to revenue generation.
    • Investments (e.g., Equity/Fixed Income Analysts): Base salaries are competitive, but bonuses are generally more modest compared to sales roles.

2. Pension Funds (e.g., CPP, OTPP, etc.):

  • Base Salary: Associates in private equity or deal teams at pension funds can earn $90k-$110k, with bonuses ranging from 30%-50% of base salary.
  • Analyst Level: Some reports suggest analysts in PE groups at top pensions like CPP earn $120k-$140k CAD out of undergrad.
  • Culture & WLB: Pension funds are known for their strong work-life balance and collaborative culture, making them attractive for long-term careers.

3. Boutique Asset Managers:

  • Base Salary: Smaller firms or boutiques may offer slightly lower base salaries, often starting around $65k-$75k for analysts.
  • Bonus Potential: Bonuses are typically less structured and can vary widely depending on the firm's size, performance, and AUM (Assets Under Management).

4. Regional Variance (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal):

  • Toronto: As the financial hub, compensation tends to be higher here, especially for roles tied to major banks or large asset managers.
  • Vancouver/Calgary: These cities may offer slightly lower compensation but often come with better work-life balance.
  • Montreal: Compensation is competitive, especially for roles in long-only funds or pension funds based in the city.

Key Takeaways:

  • Compensation in AM is generally lower than Investment Banking but offers better work-life balance.
  • Sales and distribution roles often have higher bonus potential compared to investment-focused roles.
  • Pension funds stand out for their competitive pay and excellent culture.

If you’re looking for more specific figures or insights, engaging with professionals on WSO forums or networking within the Canadian AM space could provide additional clarity.
