BCG Location Preferences

Hi guys,

Can someone help with 3 location preferences for BCG - I like NY and Boston but not sure about the third choice - Philly/New Jersey/Washington?

Would appreciate if someone can throw some light.

Philly is the least-selective of the bunch and is the fastest growing. Source: conversation I had with a BCG Philly recruiter recently.

Arya:

If its least selective then chances are that the peer group wont be that good. I dont want to be the guy who is part of such a group. I'd rather not get selected and do something else

Not really. It might be marginally worse than the peer group you would have in NY, but its also less selective because the office is growing at a much higher rate than the other offices on your list. That would likely mean an easier time getting promoted.

Fair point and to add to your argument, an office which is new and growing would also tend to be more open to new ways to doing things. In summary, I think its really a matter of where you fit. For me, the utility from a marginally better peer group is much higher than the utility from getting promoted faster

It's OK to be an over achiever. But get on the team before you start talking bad about the competition. You don't know what type of people are on the other side of the door and you're going to be competing with some talented people regardless of office.

Not trying to bash you or knock your confidence. Just humble yourself a little and things will work out fine. There are too many variables in life and especially the job hunt to be asking about the prestige of a certain office.

@thatguy12345: The sentence, "If its least selective then CHANCES ARE that the peer group wont be that good" is a perfectly logical, unemotional and neutral sentence and i dont see how it infers that i have been 'talking bad about the competiton' - fyi I was not the one who said that Philly is the least selective

I'm trying to help you out here. No one is attacking you but your concern about office prestige is pretty indicative of someone who is lacking in perspective. Perspective is typically a product of experience. From my experience you are focusing on the wrong things. You are attempting to compete with a very elite group of people, but your are asking questions that assume you will make the cut. Maybe your that good. But I've found that even talented people need to be focused on the right tasks to beat talented people. If your legitimately concerned about office prestige, and how that would reflect upon your trajectory or brand...the I assure you, you are not properly focused.

Point is, don't worry about office prestige because you should focus on step A, getting an offer before your talk details.

@redninja: I don't know if I am a fit for BCG or not, that is for the firm to decide. But I do know that your gutter language and attitude does not merit any response or debate. So these would be my last words to you.

@thatguy12345: Thanks a lot for your comments. They were very helpful and my apologies for coming across as an over-aggressive 'tool' as redninja puts it. Really I have no grand visions about my ability and perhaps as you say I lack perspective although I certainly don't lack in experience. But i would urge you to take a step back and consider where I am coming from - are you really sure that selectivity is not a criteria to focus on. I might be wrong here but don't people consider selectivity, 'prestige' as you put it although my focus is really on selectivity or peer group, while making decisions about which places to apply (including business school or job). Isn't that also part of why BCG or Goldman or Harvard are what they are. Do think about it and perhaps you are right and I am wrong.

Either way this thread has gone off on a tangent so this would be end of discussion from my end.

I think it was just 1,2,3. Incidentally after discussing with some people who work there, I listed NYC followed by NJY followed by Boston

They'll ask for percentages during your first round interviews if you are asked to interview.

Thanks a lot, this was very useful
