Assuming you could get staffed somewhere, wouldn't you want your base to be a city that's cheap as hell? I'm staffed in NYC but based in the south and this is one of the best situations you could ask for. If you're rarely going to be home, might as well make home an affordable situation.

Most of the consultants I know based in NYC don't have a tremendous amount of travel either, which kills some of the biggest perks of the job (alternative travel, expense account, hella points, etc.)

Depends on where you are in your career/private life. All the travel is exciting during your early 20s, but the further you advance, the more you will appreciate having a local client base, which will give you the option to spend an evening at home with your family at least once in a while. So unless it's for a business analyst role which is anyway only 2 years, I would always advise to pick a city as a base where you actually want to live.

In terms of the McK staffing model: Yes, theoretically it's totally flexible and you can be staffed across offices. Reality is a bit different. In order to get staffed on attractive client engagements, you need to build a network of partners who know who you are, like to work with you, and take an active interest in your development. That's much more difficult across offices.

In terms of NYC vs. Toronto: Of course, NYC has a greater reputation. More competitive office (speaking of McK). On the other hand, it's not like in banking where NYC plays in a completely different league. Likelihood of promotion, likelihood of partner election, and compensation are not higher in NYC than in Toronto.

And finally, in terms of the application process (speaking about McK, but I'm sure BCG is the same): Unless the people you know are extremely senior, all they will be able to do is pass your info along. So it's not like because you know someone your chances of making it through the application process will be in any way better. As you might imagine, there are regularly requests from senior clients to favorably consider the application of their son/daughter/nephew whatever, and if we were to lower our standards in these cases, we would open a door for sub-par applicants. Therefore, if you end up deciding you want NYC, why don't you apply to McK NYC?
