How Do You Ask For A Recommendation When Networking ? MBB

I am working on breaking into consulting as advanced degree, here is my profile:

1- PhD - GPA 3.91 / Non-target (the location I attend is not a target) 2- 4 years Industrial Experience as Project Lead Engineer

I am networking, while I am being lucky and getting responses and get the calls, but how do you ask for a recommendation when the partner/consultant does not know your potential, I am seeing online that people ask for a recommendation, how do you manage to ask for this? Thank you and I appreciate the help.

(I am Applying to the midwest offices (relatively small offices).
