Why is Boston considered to be a second tier location for MBB firms if two of the three have their headquarters in Boston (BCG and Bain)? I've read that here and heard from other places that NYC, SF, Chicago are considered to be the best and I was curious as to why. Also, why headquarter out of Boston for Bain and BCG and not NYC?

NYC, Chicago, SF, are all first-tier, but I'd argue Boston is too. It's just the 4th best among the first-tier offices. These offices are all going to be the exact same exit-wise though, so just pick wherever you actually want to live.
Proximity to New York, bigger city with a supposedly more appealing brand/lifestyle/vibe.. Might make it harder to objectively view Boston as a good office location. Worked there for 4 months one summer and thought it was great, but it’s pricey to live there full-time!
