McKinsey Implementation Practice??

I am an advanced degree candidate (MD/PhD) applied to McK for an associate role and got through the screening round (PST, 2 group interviews) as well as the 2nd round (2 cases, 2 fit). The firm requested that I consider doing my 3rd round for the implementation group.

1. Does anyone know about this specialized group versus being a regular associate?
2. Which is more attractive in terms of career trajectory?
3. Would you do this personally? why or why not?
4. I also have interviews with BCG and Bain for traditional associate consultant roles, should I weigh all of these opportunities equally and decide purely based on personal "fit" or location?

Thanks, I really appreciate any feedback.

Hi Workaholic88,

Congrats on your final round interview with McKinsey. I'm having same with McKinsey in the Midwest. From what I understand, after exchanging emails with the Implementation group recruiter,... 1) it's a new practice area in McKinsey, different from the traditional "Associate" role, where project engagements last much longer than the standard 8 - 12 weeks engagements. 2) My feeling from McKinsey consultants is that the traditional path is the more attractive path 3) I would not focus on this group, mainly because it's viewed less prestigious within Mckinsey (even if the consultants may not explicitly say this) and I understand the compensation is slightly lower, and there's no partner track. 4) I also have interview with BCG (final round) but have not heard from Bain (applied for Consultant role), and if what I understand from this forum is correct, than base your decision on "fit" between Mckinsey traditional path (Associate role not implementation) vs BCG vs Bain (assuming location is the same).

Just my two cents.

agree with above. No trying to offend, but they probably thought you were somewhat of a weaker candidate for the traditional associate, but still like you, and want you in implementation.

Agree on choosing on fit/location, which are kinda the same thing. Culture and vary drastly on location. See who you like better during your interviews.
