Mckinsey Operations Track
How are the different tracks viewed at McKinsey? Are some more 'prestigeous' than others? Is operations at McKinsey like back office at a bank?

Career Resources
Is this Operations consulting? If so, it's still consulting, so obviously not back-office. The day-to-day work and overall career path is similar to the other consulting tracks, but you'll be focusing on operations work.
The impression I got while recruiting for McK is that the more specialized roles were viewed as less glamorous than the generalist one, especially ops and BTO (business technology, which is essentially IT consulting). But the recruiting process is similar and it's still a very hard job to get.
Do you think B-Schools view it as less glamorous?
Maybe a little, but even so, at the end of the day, you'd still be a McKinsey consultant, which is arguably the top feeder to b-school.
And fyi, ops typically promotes their BA's directly to associate, so you don't have to get an MBA. If your goal is to make partner as fast as possible, ops is the easiest way to do it.
By goal is HBS-->PE
operations is pretty relevant for pe. do a good job, take on responsibilities, and impress your boss so you get good recommendations. i remember you have a pretty good gmat, gpa should be ok, right? it's all about how you present your story then. try doing something extraordinary by the time you apply so you have an interesting story.
Hey sorry to revive an old thread, but I was curious if anyone here is familiar with the recruiting process with McK Ops Analyst Academy? Is it the same case-study interview process that any other analyst does?
Bump.
Bump again....damn it.
Yes, same recruiting process.
phone chat with hr > phone case > 1st round > 2nd round > offer
Anyone knows salary level (by city), etc.? Looks like they look for people with 2 years of experience.
Does anyone here work at McK ops? Is it possible to eventually lateral to the strategy side?
Bump--how competitive is Ops compared to Strategy?
ops is significantly easier to get into than generalist. also significantly less prestigeous but its not like BO or anything its still consulting
Wouldn't say its easier to get into, same bar in general, but there is a bit more of a technical aspect to ops than generalist.
No difference in prestige, e.g. no dif in pay, work, etc.
Ops consultants work mostly in ops, but can get staffed into other projects if there is a strong enough push to do so.
yes, there is a large difference between doing strategy consulting and streamlining operations in terms of prestige - even if they are both at McK.
Sigh...please don't comment on stuff where you don't facts to support...
Within McK, there is no difference between Ops, generalist, other practices, etc. Career path is exactly the same. "Prestige" might be different in your mind, but no one within McKinsey or industry will see a difference.
Is pay the same even at senior levels?
Partner pay is going to be performance pay dependent, so pay is def not the same, but prob in similar bands for similar performance.
