No interview after networking with senior partner. How to respond?

So I unfortunately didn't get picked for an interview for a boutique firm after networking with a senior partner. I sent him my resume before talking on the phone with him, and he pretty much talked to me as if I already had an interview and was giving me tips on how to do well on the interview.

I want to e-mail him and ask "Why didn't I get an interview?" but obviously that's way too blunt. So I was wondering how I could ask this more discretely? Or should I just do the typical "unfortunately I was not selected for an interview but am still interested in XX"

And just in case you're wondering, I don't think it was b/c I was simply not qualified. I've gotten interviews at both BCG and Bain so far and this a tier-2 firm.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

let him know that you didnt get it but did get other interviews (a sort of 'status update'), and ask him if he has any advice on how you should proceed... you don't want to be anymore direct than that.

In my experience, networking with senior bankers rarely results in an interview. They are just too far removed from the process to understand how much you need their help. Associates and vice presidents are a lot more useful. They are young enough to still understand, but old enough to have some power to get you an interview.
