Comprehensive style inquiry for Summer Associate
Hey everybody,
I've read plenty of posts regarding one or the other, but there are a lot of answers pertaining to analyst roles, and they tend to differ a little bit. I realize I'll be relying on analysts who know what they're doing this summer, and that I'll be annoying the sh!t out of them (since I'll be very fresh into the world of IB), so I'd be very hesitant to think an associate really can dress much differently from an analyst.. But in any case, I have some questions I'd like answered, please.
I'm in an MBA business schools">M7 program and have placed this summer at a BB in NYC, where I'll spend 10 weeks as a summer associate. Program starts next week so if I need to do some shopping, I'll have time this week for procurement + alterations. In my old job, I wore business casual, and consequently have plenty of shirts that are anything from gingham to pink to solid white and blue. I know I'll have to stick to white and light blue solids for my internship; that's fine.. Suits will have to be conservative too, but I've got that covered.
Can I wear cufflinks? If not, I'll have to get some new shirts. No tragedy, just need to know..
Can I wear brown shoes with my blue suits?
Can I wear the same watch I've had a few years now...? In my opinion, it's a nice watch but it is expensive ($8-10k) and I don't want to give off the wrong impression (I did actually buy this with money earned).
Can I wear name-ties (hermes/ferregamo/etc) or do I need to stick to an assortment of brooks brothers discretes? Do I need to steer clear of red ties (heard these are power ties)? I presume pink ties are out of the question?
Can the shirts have spread collars?
The Investment Banking Club on campus was just fine, but not much more than this when it came to recruiting, and answers were honestly all over the place when I asked above.
I understand the point is; don't look like a schmuck for your internship (or FT assoc role thereafter either, obviously), but though not Italian, I am European and have allowed myself some sprezzatura in the past...

I wouldn't wear cufflinks all the time, and certainly not flashy ones. As for the watch, it's probably fine as long as it doesn't draw (too much) attention. I wouldn't wear red ties, but name brands are fine, just don't flaunt it.
I've never understood these topics. Is wearing a red shirt really so alarming that it will impact your offer chances? Maybe it was because I interned at a boutique in Cali, but there were a couple analysts that insisted on pink shirts / ties almost weekly. Never raised any flags among anyone...

^^^ yeah West Coast dress (and overall culture) is vastly different than NYC. Compared to East Coast, pretty much anything goes within reason out in Cali
I would concentrate on doing the job. Not, how many days a week you should wear cufflinks. No one will notice, let alone care.
I think you should go with the classy look. Please do not wear brown shoes with blue suit. Keep the cuff links for important occasion. And I would suggest losing the watch for the moment if you really want blend in.
In my opinion brown shoes with blue suit is perfectly fine.
Since when has a pink tie issue been a thing? I did it at least once a week during my summer and had 0 problems.
