how to dress preppy

hey fellow monkeys. so I just got to a school where apparently everybody dresses very preppy. I am an international student and don't much about the preppy dress code. can someone tell me some common preppy brands? especially where do you get those drivers?

The way I see it, "preppy" has become split between two factions: - An older, more exclusive (more old money) faction originating and still largely living in New England, many of whom still have Ivy League ties. These are the types that live in Nantucket/Cape Cod, buy from companies like J. Press, L.L. Bean, Quoddy, etc. They ostensibly get "timeless clothes" that are also for the most part functional - A newer, less exclusive (more new money), and flashier type that has become pervasive along the East Coast and in the South. They still have expensive tastes, but they tend to be kitchier and are bigger suckers for labels (this is where Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, etc. folks come in)

I think you should really figure out your own style first and not worry about how people label it. I myself incorporate strands of both, and if anything I'd say I go for "timeless"/trad looks but with some modern character. At this point in my life I shy away from labels as much as possible and hate extremely showy brands like Vineyard Vines

Sounds more WASPy, no? Much the same, but the word 'preppy' just sounds like it weighs towards the more ostentatious description. Like....Volvo vs. Mercedes. Subaru vs. Lexus. Southampton vs. East Hampton.

thanks for the input. it's definitely true not to follow blindly. I just want to know more about this dressing style so that if someday I want to get a decent driver or something, I know where to go.

just dont over do it as an international so you don't seem like you're being something you're not. for instance choose more neutral colors for your chino shorts and polos instead of pastel salmon or mint. also get preppy clothing with minimal branding i.e not massive vineyard vines logo

with this method u fit in without looking like the fratty douchebag many of us have grown to hate
