Jacket to wear over dress shirt?
So I work in IB in SF. Lots of peoples wear vests over their shirts but I hate the way they look. I usually wear a full sleeve somewhat puffy columbia jacket or I wear a quarterzip/sweater over my shirt but it gets too stuffy.
Any reccs for jackets to wear to look sharp? In SF so can't do blazers or trench coats really.
In San Francisco, where the weather can change quickly and often remains cool, opting for a smart yet comfortable jacket that fits well over a dress shirt is key. Since you're not a fan of vests and find quarter zips or sweaters too stuffy, consider these options:
Patagonia Jacket: Many office workers in SF, especially those in fields like office leasing, prefer Patagonia jackets. These are lightweight yet warm, and they offer a clean, professional look without being overly formal.
Lightweight Sport Coat: Even though you mentioned a hesitation towards blazers, a lightweight sport coat can be a versatile piece. Look for one in a breathable fabric like cotton or a cotton blend, which won't be as heavy or formal as traditional blazers but will elevate your look.
Soft Shell Jacket: These jackets are excellent for layering and provide comfort without the bulk. They are typically made from a water-resistant material, making them practical for the unpredictable SF weather.
Performance Dress Shirt with Built-in Flexibility: While not a jacket, investing in high-quality performance dress shirts that offer breathability and flexibility could reduce your need for additional layers. Brands like those mentioned in the WSO threads offer shirts that are professional and comfortable without additional layering.
Each of these options should keep you looking sharp and feeling comfortable without resorting to the bulkier layers you wish to avoid.
