Loafers as an Analyst
What are people's thoughts on wearing loafers as a first year Analyst? Is it safer to just go with Oxfords?
About to start at a BB in London but I am not sure about getting a pair.

Career Resources
The privilege to wear loafers is earnt, one must wait until blessing has been received from the senior MD of your group or an associate promotion has been bestowed upon you.
On a real note, see what the guys in your office wear, but I would play it safe at the beginning and wear Oxfords! Depending on the BB, if it's a US one loafers would probably be fine. If it's a European one then stick to Oxfords at the beginning. Just make sure your shoes are black and you'll have no problem.
Why are brown shoes frowned upon in Europe?
I don't know the reason for it, but it's probably just an old fashioned British tradition.
Because it looks really shit under a navy suit. Look brown dress shoes are great for business casual, but not for formal
same in usa
The adage is "no brown in town," which would indicate that brown shoes were probably commonplace amongst the bumbling townspeople in the English countryside.
I have personally heard stories of MDs crashing out on AN1s for wearing brown shoes to a client meeting.
If you want to play it safe as a junior wear black shoes. With a little bit of luck and some light stockholm syndrome you will eventually get to a point in your career where you can wear flip flops.
lmfao y’all really running out of shit to talk about huh
Nobody gives a shit kid just wear what you want.
Wait a couple of months before pulling out the loafers, and also match it with the weather.
No one gives a shit. I lateraled from a stock exchange to an MM and I wear green suede loafers when it's hot. I am in Asia though, so can't speak for banks in US.
What were you doing at the exchange and what's the dress code there for the Asia region?
I was an economic analyst at a stock exchange. The dress code is way more relaxed in my country than in NYC (as I saw at WSO), I know a senior analyst who always wore dark jeans and big bulky sneakers. I myself can come with a poloshirt on casual Friday and no one will give a shit.
P.S. Relaxed rules usually apply more to the hotter months, we can have up to 50 degree Celsium in July/August.
Go ahead. At my BB a lot of people (including analysts and even interns) wear loafers. I don’t see a problem with it. It looks good so why not?
Edit: perhaps important to note that I have never seen someone wear those Gucci/SF loafers. Just stick to black clean loafers
It used to be a faux pas to wear loafers with a suit, though I'm sure exceptions were made for certain personalities/circles. It's probably more acceptable today considering the general relaxation of dress codes, though I still would only wear them with something more casual and would shy away from black.
I wore ferragamos throughout my analyst years which had black bits so they didnt shine or stand out. I still use them currently. Just don't get the shiny SF / gucci bits and no one will care
If you need to make a decision now, choose a conservative option. See what your senior colleagues wear and go from there. Generally, black loafers should be fine (with no or understated inconspicuous hardware), however first make sure your boss in Europe is not overly conservative - sometimes you can come across some really old school people at European BB banks.
would say black bit leather loafers are the most formal (compared to other loafers). Suede is better for summer months.
Dress a loafer and show who you are to the ###silly boss
