If you want wheels, definitely Tumi for both. If you want more of a duffel for the carry-on, there are tons of cool ones out there. 

 

Tumi seems solid. I have seen boxes in my building from away so prob people buying those too. I think major department stores like Bloomingdales sell quality luggage too. Good luck 

 

I personally like Briggs and Riley. Tons of space and pockets, it's fairly unique so you'd be able to pick it out easier on a flight, and there's a relatively generous life time warranty. That being said, you can't go wrong with Tumi either.
