Incoming sba/sa/aci at MBB in NY. Was wondering what consultants wear and what I should be adding to my wardrobe now to be ready for the summer. Thanks!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights on what to wear as an incoming SBA/SA/ACI at MBB in New York:
General Dress Code for Consultants:
Suits: Typically, a suit is required. Opt for classic colors like navy, charcoal, or black.
Dress Shirts: Stick to white and blue dress shirts. These are considered the bread and butter of any business casual wardrobe. Recommended brands include:
Brooks Brothers (~$80 - $100)
Banana Republic (~$80 - $90)
Charles Tyrwhitt (~$30 - $50)
TM Lewin (~$40)
Dress Pants: Ensure you have a few pairs of dress pants in neutral colors. It's more noticeable when you repeat shirts than pants.
Shoes: Oxfords are a safe choice. Double strap monk shoes and penny loafers can also be acceptable. Brown shoes are generally a no-go in more conservative settings.
Tips for Building Your Wardrobe:
Try Suits in Person: It's advisable to try your suits in person at a physical location and then buy them online if necessary.
Budget-Friendly Options: If you're on a budget, focus on getting a few high-quality pieces rather than a large quantity. Charles Tyrwhitt and TM Lewin offer good quality dress shirts at reasonable prices.
Additional Considerations:
Business Casual: While a full suit might be required for client meetings, business casual (dress shirt and pants) might be acceptable for everyday office work.
Accessories: Keep accessories minimal and professional. A classic watch and a simple tie can complete your look.
By following these guidelines, you'll be well-prepared for your summer role at MBB in New York.
I'm at Bain in SF now - T-Shirts, polos, jeans, all good. Did a week in NYC in the winter and it was more formal, dress shirts, winter coats, but I'd say you can still rock more casual shoes if you'd like. Chinos and jeans are fine too don't need slacks but to start off could be more formal

Not at MBB, but having seen friends/peers there, they dress pretty much the same as bankers:
Black/dark brown dress shoes (oxfords) and match color belts, navy / charcoal suit pants / slacks, white / blue dress shirt.

Dress as gay as possible and you’ll be a project manager in no time

Literally doesn't matter. it's business casual leaning on the more casual side. Henley shirts work totally fine
