Necessity of Navy Blazer for SAs

Is there a need to have a navy blazer for use during a summer internship at a business formal investment bank? I understand that it's not appropriate for in-office wear, but I do know that there are social events planned throughout the course of the internship and am not sure if one of these might require a navy blazer or something similar. And yes, I also know that a navy blazer is not equivalent to an orphaned navy suit coat.

Thanks for the help.

Social events at any bank, business formal included, will take two forms.

  1. Leave directly from work event. At this event, you will be wearing whatever you wore to work, with your option of the suit coat and tie.

  2. Go home and come back. This is a normal social event, probably at a club, bowling alley, or movie theatre. You should wear whatever the appropriate attire is for the event. Most likely, jeans or khakis and a polo (if you are a guy).

In either of these cases, or any other case I can even think of a navy blazer is unnecessary. Basically, a blazer of any color really doesn't have a use in a business formal, or business casual bank.

I would not presume to be invited to one of these events, but say an MD at the firm has invited his group to a gathering at a country club, or to an evening event at his place in the Hamptons. A navy blazer would likely be appropriate in such a setting, correct?

Honestly, you'd probably be laughed at for trying too hard. We had a yearly golf outing at an MD's country club. We all wore golf stuff during the day and at night khaki's and a polo (I wore sandals, too, but that might have been pushing it).
