Overcoat enough for the cold?
Random question but is an overcoat over a suit enough for the cold? I have never bought an overcoat so I’m not sure how warm it gets with just that.

It should be enough, but it depends on what city you’re in (how cold it is) and how thick the overcoat is. I don’t think suit jackets are that warm so I always made sure my coat had me covered, because I’d rather be a bit too warm in the winter than too cold.
I will be in NYC so it won’t be too cold but cold enough for it to be a problem. What about for leg? I can see an overcoat solve the top half but not much for bottom half. Even for knee length overcoats.
I think something like this coat (https://www.nordstrom.com/s/cole-haan-3-in-1-car-coat/5922514?) would be what I recommend. They look good and are warmer, in my opinion. For lower body warmth, I have some thicker pairs of dress pants that I typically wear in the winter and my legs don't get nearly as cold as my upper body does so I haven't had too much of an issue there.
In London an overcoat is the most you’ll ever need.
NY gets colder than London, but you won't be outside long.

I've seen -10 (F) for extended times while skiing, A thing about NYC is that you're unlikely to ever be more than 2-3 avenues from the subway or somewhere else warm, so a really good coat is unnecessary. As such you can cheat a bit. (Ironic that I say this while windows tells me it's 18* out)
