Seersucker Suits
When is it acceptable to wear a seersucker suit? I know they're probably not for many business situations, but how about weddings and other events? They're more of a Summer thing aren't they?
They are good for weddings, horse races, summer parties etc. I rock a seersucker jacket into the office on Fridays in the summer sometimes as well.
They're only appropriate if you are auditioning for the role of Colonel Sanders.
What if I own a cotton plantation?
They're a Southern tradition from the plantation days and were adopted as the mark of the prep school, Ivy crowd of young Northeastern, educated gentlemen in the summer. You shouldn't really be wearing them to work at a junior level unless you have absolutely zero fucks to give, but you may see some of the senior guys wear them on a trading floor during the summer.
They're great socially. During the summer you can wear them to any event you'd wear a suit to. The key is getting proper footwear to complement the fabric: bucks, spectators, or (arguably) brown shoes.
I think a nice pair of boat shoes would go well with the suit.

If you're going to a wedding where people will be spilling drinks on you, I need an invite to that event.
You're missing out, they're great. You can never really take the fraternity side out of most people.
Seersucker suits are great but IMO they do not belong anywhere near the office unless you are also allowed to swill martinis at your job. Even on casual fridays i would stay away. Any summer party, especially an outdoor one, is when you can break out the seersucker.
Ditto above. Not for work, but you can definitely rock it out for summer social events.

Thinking about getting into energy trading. When I think of energy trading I think of Houston. Anybody wear them to work during the hot summer?
I don't know of any pure trading shops where people wear suits, much less seersucker. I think you're thinking of attorneys or perhaps people who work in D.C. in the summer.
I've seen some of the senior guys wear them occasionally during the summer but that's about it. If you're a junior guy, I would only wear them outside of the office on the weekends to a party or something like that. Unless you give zero fucks, then have it.

You'll see them more often in Louisiana and Mississippi.
