Shave or not shave
Rising junior heading into consulting recruiting this summer and fall. Doing everything(mbb,t2,B4,rx) I am not clean shaven partly due to religious reasons, partially bc I like my beard. Should I shave, go to an American school but for some firms am applying to some Middle East roles.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, maintaining a beard is generally acceptable as long as it is well-groomed and professional. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:
Cultural and Regional Norms: Since you're applying to some Middle East roles, having a beard might actually align well with cultural norms in that region. In fact, a beard can be seen as more common and acceptable in professional settings there compared to some Western offices.
Firm-Specific Expectations: While MBB, T2, and Big 4 firms are generally more flexible with appearance, it's always a good idea to ensure your beard is neatly trimmed and looks intentional. A clean, professional appearance is key, regardless of whether you're clean-shaven or bearded.
Religious Considerations: If your beard is partly due to religious reasons, most firms will respect that. Just ensure it is well-maintained to convey professionalism.
Consulting Recruiting Standards: Consulting firms value polished and professional appearances, but they are also increasingly diverse and inclusive. As long as your beard is tidy and doesn't detract from your overall presentation, it should not be an issue.
In summary, you don't need to shave, especially if your beard is part of your identity or religious practice. Just make sure it is well-groomed and complements your professional attire. If you're still unsure, you can always reach out to someone in the firm or region you're applying to for additional insights.
